Myson Johnson-Cook, Texas football recruiting target, impresses at UIL state track meet
Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian covets speed.
So it's wasn't surprising when the
Longhorns offered a scholarship to DeSoto athlete
Myson Johnson-Cook, the No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2027 according to 247Sports' composite rankings. His overwhelming athleticism was a key cog in the Eagles' path to the 6A
UIL state track and field meet.
Johnson-Cook showed up Saturday on the UT campus as the final leg of the 4x100-meter relay, and his blazing speed led the Eagles to a second-place finish and a personal record of 40.15 seconds. He and his team also ran the 4x200-meter relay, finishing fourth with a time of 1 minute, 24.70 seconds.
"I'm very proud of the team. Before the season started nobody expected us to go to state or to run a 40-point low," Johnson-Cook said.
After the event, Johnson-Cook told the American-Statesman that he planned to meet Sunday morning with Longhorns running backs coach Chad Scott for a campus tour. For now, it's too early to tell if the athlete is leaning toward Texas. But the rising junior hopes he and the Longhorns' relationship reaches a point where he seriously considers committing.
On the gridiron, DeSoto uses Johnson-Cook mostly as a running back. He rushed for 911 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 10.4 yards per carry last season. And though he has state speed, he measures in at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, a good bit bulkier than the average track star.
