The events that transpired on Sunday in Austin can be looked at through many angles.
Receiving three verbals from prospects of their caliber, Mack Brown had to go home Sunday night and smile. Because what Brown did will echo for the next few weeks and into the summer. In one evening, he nabbed a Top-10 talent from an Aggie pipeline, Lufkin; he took an East Texan player from a conference rival right out from under their eyes, and a Tackle from Bud Hays who could be special.
It’s all about momentum, and Texas has some. With a renewed emphasis on securing early pledges, Sunday became a battle for would-be Junior’s and UT won it’s fair share.
The Longhorns secured a triplet of prospects, each bringing their own mini battle win.
Keke Coutee, 5-foot-10 185 pound athlete, from Lufkin. Coutee was offered by Texas a few months back at cornerback, but work exclusively at WR in Sunday’s mini camp. UT staff told him he could play at either spot, thus Coutee made it official and committed to Texas. The speedster can fly (4.40) and has the stop-and-cut ability of a pro. Good hands, good hips, and his stop-start is obvious. Also, the Horns snag a kid from Lufkin, an A&M pipeline of sorts which produced Reggie McNeal and Javorskie Lane among others. He joins former teammate Carrington Byndon, a junior starter in the UT secondary. This was a huge get for Texas.
Johnny Shaw, 6-foot 180 pound Safety from Center. Shaw committed to TCU almost four weeks ago, after taking a one-day excursion to Fort Worth. I covered Shaw in their bi-district playoff loss to Fairfield and watched him excel at the ETSN combine a few weeks back. Shaw is an impressive specimen, with untold ability and work ethic. This is a homerun in many regards, but mainly it’s Brown telling TCU coach Gary Patterson, ‘we still get who we want.’

Connor Lanfear, 6-foot-6 275 pound OT, from Buda Hays is an imposing figure to say the least. Counter that with the fact he’s just 16 years old, and you have a project worth keeping.  He’s got Left Tackle written all over him and joins No. 1 ranked in 2015 Maea Teuhema of Keller and Sherman’s Aaron Garza in the ’15 offensive line class for Texas. “It’s a dream come true and I just feel so incredibly blessed,†Lanfear told ESPN.com. He held interest from Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oregon and TCU.

Others who left with a UT offer include:
Chasson Virgil – QB, West Mesquite. Offer list includes for the physically imposing dual-threat QB, Clemson, Missouri, Mississippi State, and Nebraska.
Emmanuel Porter- WR, Dallas Lincoln. The 6-foot-5 190 pound TCU commit is said to be a UT lean after garnering an offer Sunday. His recruiting will most certainly heat up in the coming months. The 4-star, red zone mismatch left a Texas fan. *** NOTE — De-committed from TCU an hour ago.
Jay Bradford-Â RB, Splendora, known for his 10.49 100 Meter time.
Jason Hall-Â DB, South Grand Prairie and Nebraska commit, and holds offers from Baylor, Iowa and OU.
Trevor Elbert- OL, Rockwall-Heath 6-foot-5 280 pounds
Kemah Siverand-Â WR, Cypress Ridge 6-foot 180 pounder says he’s 50-50 between the Horns and Aggies, has offers from both.
Kris Boyd- RB/DB, Gilmer. Boyd is cousin’s with Texas-ex and current Pittsburgh Steelers DB, Curtis Brown. Was offered by TCU at Wednesday’s camp in Kilgore.
Garret Gray-Â WR, Marble Falls, 6-foot-5 205 pound athlete, who could play Tight End, a position of dire need in the next few recruiting cycles.
Jarrett Stidham- QB, Stephenville. Covered this 6-foot-4 190 pound Yellowjacket in last year’s 3A State-semifinal as a WR. Now, moving to QB, he might have the strongest arm in all of Texas high school football. He’s been offered by Texas Tech and Baylor, and Texas A&M. [/colored_box]
Also hearing Texas City’s twin duo might both be getting a UT offer soon. Armanti, the WR, already holds one, but brother D’Onta may be getting one as well. It would definitely bode well for Texas, as A&M is heard to be gaining on Armanti’s pledge.
Ut offered Katy’s Rodney Anderson during the week, and that shows you the shift Texas has made towards RB’s in the 2015 group. Missing in 2013, and only having one (so far) in the 2014 class with Daniel Greshman de-committment, look for UT to grab two or three RB’s in this class.
In baseball, the MLB June Amateur Draft was held last week, and UT closer Corey Knebel went 39th to the Detroit Tigers. He leaves as second on the UT all-time saves list (34, behind Huston Street) but had a tumultuous ending to his Longhorn’s career with suspensions and trouble. Most of the highly touted high school prospects were left unpicked through the first eight rounds, like Team USA’s Andy McGuire, which means the Longhorns will bring in it’s best recruiting class in years thanks to the pro’s passing on their prospects. That’s a big lift for UT coach Augie Garrido. Need as much good news on the diamond as they can get in Austin.
Quote of the Week: “Â “The coaches were all happy. I was happy myself, It was a great feeling to be committed to Texas.” -Â Keke Coutee, Lufkin 2015 WR/CB on being the Longhorns newest commit
