Way too early predictions - Longhorns

Recommended Posts

I like doing these and then coming back at the end of the year and seeing who was the most accurate.  I'll make my predictions and my reasons why.

Maryland -    @Maryland................  WIN - We owe them and Herman wants it bad

Tulsa -           @Austin........................ WIN - Our second team is better

USC -             @Austin....................... WIN - A war, but playing in Austin gives us a slight edge.  This could be the only game we lose

TCU -             @Austin....................... WIN - There is no love lost between Herman and Patterson and Herman won't call off the dogs

KSU -             @Manhattan............ WIN - The Purple Wizards days are over.

OU -               @Dallas...................... WIN - Should have won last year - the players remember.  Our defense snuffs OU.

Baylor -         @Austin...................... WIN - We will be 6-0 at this point and Baylor will make it 7-0 and we are #8 in the nation

OSU -            @Stillwater............... WIN - I hate Okie lite.  This will be a war, but we edge them by a point

WVU -           @Austin...................... WIN - Trap game, but we prevail - #4 in the nation

TTU -              @Lubbock................ WIN - TTU's lack of defense will cause them a horrible season and we won't help

ISU -              @Austin....................... WIN - It's ISU - spunky but ISU

KU -               @Lawrence............... WIN - practice game leading up to our conference playoff game against:  TCU, which the WIN will be a sweep for the Horns.

Maryland -    @Maryland................  WIN - Nobody looks ahead to Tulsa.

Tulsa -           @Austin........................ WIN - Honing our skills in this one.

USC -             @Austin....................... WIN - They are a shadow of their former selves. Brand new QB, TB, WR, losses on D. They will be tough because they're still talented. But they're going to be in a similar position to what we were in last year.

TCU -             @Austin....................... WIN - We pull this one out only by a hair and probably because its a home game. They have some talent, but not a lot of depth.

KSU -             @Manhattan............ WIN - A tough way to head into OU week.

OU -               @Dallas...................... WIN - Defense shines in this one. Murray retires from football.

Baylor -         @Austin...................... WIN - We're starting to really not like Baylor.

OSU -            @Stillwater............... LOSS - I hate Okie lite.  But they meet an overconfident Texas team. Its Stillwater, tough place to play anyway.

WVU -           @Austin...................... WIN - We knock out Grier in the 1st and cruise to victory.

TTU -              @Lubbock................ WIN - Donkey stomp

ISU -              @Austin....................... WIN - Nice win.

KU -               @Lawrence............... WIN - practice game leading up to our conference playoff game against:

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Texas 31

OU 10

9-3

This,

8 wins is the floor and cranks up the heat on CTH.

We gave away 4-5 last year, were in every game but TCU.

2 biggest things I see,

Anderson making the OL competition best of 4 as he is better than anyone the past 2 years.

And Sam seizing the job and staying healthy.   This is NOT a Shane offense, if there is a real QB competition in the fall, we might be in trouble.

Texas at Maryland - Win - The coaching staff won't allow a repeat of last season. 38-17

Tulsa at Texas - Win - Texas tunes up the starters in the first half and gets reps for the 3 deep in the 2nd half.  45-13

USC at Texas - Win - This will be ND at DKR all over again and just as close. 45-42

TCU at Texas - Loss - Patterson replaces the purple wizard as Texas' nemesis 27-24

Texas at K State - Loss - Snyder says my purple >frog purple 24-21

Texas vs zero u - Loss - this series always seems to run in streaks. Texas sits at 3-3 and people are freaking out. Texas has lost 3 games by less than 21 points total. 40-30

Baylor at Texas - Win - Dominant win. Baylor plays tough early but knuckles under as Texas hits on all cylinders in the 2nd half. 35-10

Texas at Okie Lite - Win - The defense confuses the retooled Cowboy offense into multiple turnovers while the offense is steady. 28-7

WVa at Texas - Win - A shootout. The Texas offense comes alive while the defense gives fans pause. 45-35

Texas at Tech - Win - A low scoring game for this series. 28-24

Iowa St at Texas - Win - Iowa St takes a step back after last years successful season. 38-17

Texas at Kansas - Win - It's no contest from the start. 54-14

Texas finishes 2nd in the Big 12 and plays the land thieves. Riley and his meth smoking acolytes find out revenge is a dish best served cold (Klingon proverb) 45-35

History has shown you must have a generational type QB if the OLine is just above average or a game manager type behind a top 5 OLine with playmakers around the QB.  UT has neither scenario working in its favor.  Consistency on offense will continue to be a struggle and despite the best efforts of the defense, UT will more than likely drop a few games this season, but remain in the Big XII race b/c of the average nature of the conference.

IMO, our OL will be above average - at least compared to the Big 12 defenses.  Our QB will be average but steady and the game changer (Ingram) has not arrived on campus yet.  Beyond this and as many a top coach has said, you win with defense.  And we will have the best in the conference and one of the best in the nation.

I know the past few years have jaded the optimism of most Longhorn fans, but get ready for a jolt of good news.  Our football team is going to be good.  Herman and Orlando are going to see to it.

Injuries will be key, of course.  I think this year will prove how adept we are at managing games.  Herman will be going up against a few brilliant coaches that manage games extraordinarily well.  Does the Purple wizard come to mind?

Football is like a sword fight - thrust and parry, thrust and parry.   It is not unusual for the better player to win with less talent.

We shall see how "Mensa" Herman really is.

The Mensa part was hiring McKnight and Orlando.

Tech returns like 10 of their 11 starters on defense that held us to 23 pts in Nov.  Not saying they'll be world beaters, but I wouldn't count on a bad Tech defense either.

and if our "play caller" would have had half a brain and remembered we were trying to kill clock on 3rd and 2...

    • TWO OF OHIO STATE'S TOP REMAINING RECRUITING BATTLES SET TO FEATURE RYAN DAY VS. TOM HERMAN SHOWDOWNS By Andrew Ellis on June 25, 2019 at 1:05 pm @teddyheisman OSU FOOTBALL RECRUITING Email this ArticleShare on RedditShare on TwitterShare on Facebook169 34 COMMENTS We're on the heels of the biggest recruiting weekend of the year and Ohio State's 2020 picture is a bit more clear than it was just five short days ago. The addition of Clark Phillips was a huge add for Jeff Hafley and the Buckeye secondary and 2021 wideout Jayden Ballard gives Brian Hartline another big piece to the future wide receiver room. While more good news is certainly coming over the next handful of days, there's been plenty of movement with a particular pair of Ohio State targets. Five-star tailback Bijan Robinson and four-star safety Lathan Ransom are without a doubt two of Ryan Day's top remaining targets for the Class of 2020, and the Buckeyes will look to outduel a familiar foe for the Tucson teammates.  Ohio State has had success in Texas of late with the likes of Jeffrey Okudah, Baron Browning, J.K Dobbins, and Garrett Wilson all finding their way to Columbus. Wilson's recruitment was the one that really came down to the Buckeyes and in-state Longhorns. But Tom Herman has the program heading in the right direction following a 10-win season that included a win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. After a number of head-to-head battles with Urban Meyer – including a victory for four-star 2018 Houston corner Anthony Cook – Herman and his staff are now duking it out with Ryan Day. This time it's for two of the top prospects in the Grand Canyon State. It's worth noting that Ohio State and Texas aren't the only players involved here. USC is also in the picture for Robinson while Notre Dame and LSU are factors in the Ransom recruitment. However, it definitely feels like both recruitments are going to come down to the Buckeyes and Longhorns.  On the Bijan Robinson front, he was in Columbus two weeks ago and spent this past weekend in Austin. There were positive vibes after visiting Ohio State with several members of his family in tow, but cautious optimism was the play there considering what went down with fellow five-star Kendall Milton and his post-Columbus trips to SEC country. The Buckeyes could really use an elite back to help complete what's already a stellar group of talent on offense. Robinson and Milton have been the top guys for some time now, but the 6-foot, 200-pound Tucson product is without question the more likely option now that both have finished up their official visits.  If you follow this stuff on Twitter, you probably have picked up on the emoji game and how certain staffs use them to announce a commitment. Based on a tweet from Bryan Carrington – who is basically the Longhorns' version of Mark Pantoni – Texas received a silent commitment over the weekend while Robinson was in town. There was a bit of worry at first, but it's become abundantly clear that the news was related to a different prospect. Texas (and USC) are very much in the hunt, but there have been plenty of positive vibes coming out of Atlanta and the Rivals' Five-Star Challenge. Several "FutureCast" picks came in on Monday – the same day the players arrived – and all of them were in Ohio State's favor. Tony Alford and Ryan Day now just have to wait for a decision, but Jack Miller and the rest of the 2020 commits seem to be putting in plenty of work down in Atlanta. Interestingly enough, both Stan Drayton and Tim Beck are also very much involved here. Drayton as the position coach with Beck serving as the lead recruiter. The much-maligned former Ohio State assistant won a state title as a high school head coach in Scottsdale in the mid-90's. So, there are technically three familiar foes in this particular recruitment. Lathan Ransom's recruitment is also nearing its end, and the Buckeyes reportedly knocked it out of the park during last weekend's official trip to Columbus. Lejond Cavazos is doing everything in his power to help land yet another talented player in the secondary. And if the recent crystal ball trend is any indication, he and Jeff Hafley may have locked up the country's No. 4 safety.  Ransom could be a big first piece of what's expected to be a two-man class at safety. He was in Columbus back in February for a bit of an abbreviated visit, but he got the full taste when in town over the weekend. He's likely Ohio State's top safety target at the moment and has finished up all five official visits. Texas, Notre Dame, LSU, and Oklahoma were the other recipients.  Is the recruitment of the Salpointe Catholic teammates a package deal? Absolutely not and the notion that any prospect is a part of some sort of package is usually overhyped to begin with. But did Ohio State's homerun visits with both Robinson and Ransom position them to land two of the top remaining 2020 targets? Things are definitely looking promising.  There's no decision timeline in place for either one, and while they could wait until their senior seasons to decide, it's looking as though both will announce sometime this summer; perhaps sooner rather than later.  Texas remains a very real factor in both recruitments. Austin is obviously closer to home and both have been on campus multiple times. Are the Longhorns viewed as a viable national title contender in today's college football world? Not at this point, but you really never know if that's even a factor for any particular player.  Ryan Day, Tony Alford, and Jeff Hafley have the Buckeyes in line to possibly land both players before the end of the summer. As far as the timing, it's looking like the sooner the better in both instances as it sure seems like Herman and the Horns have some ground to make up.  The recruitments of Bijan Robinson and Lathan Ransom are two of the hottest ones to watch over the coming weeks as Ohio State looks for some good news during the dead period   https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football-recruiting/2019/06/104961/two-of-ohio-states-top-remaining-recruiting-battles-set-to-feature-a-ryan-day-vs-tom-herman-showdown
    • It’s definitely an idea that has been in his head elsewhere. But it’s something the Texas staff should have been prepared for given this isn’t he first time we’ve heard that line.
    • This talk of Broughton and wanting to play in a 4-3/aggy scheme smells fishy.  He's been a Texas lean the whole time and now all of the sudden the scheme is the deal breaker when he's known the entire time?  He'll just get moved inside like Brown and eventually Leal after he balloons up to 330+ lbs. like Brown did in the aggy s&c program.
