*****Texas vs. Oklahoma Game Thread*****

Recommended Posts

Texas (14-8, 4-5) vs. #12/15 Oklahoma (16-5, 6-3)

When: Saturday, February 3, 2017
Time: 5:15 PM
Venue: Frank Erwin Center
Location: Austin, TX

All-time series record:  Oklahoma leads Texas 54-37.
Last meeting: Oklahoma defeated Texas 70-66 (2/14/18 in Norman, OK).

After losing 73-71 in overtime to #10 Texas Tech on the road earlier this week, the Longhorns will host a ranked Oklahoma team at the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday.  This will be the first of two meetings in the regular season between Texas and Oklahoma, with the two teams meeting again in two weeks in Norman.

Texas looks to continue its winning ways at home, bringing a 10-2 record into the meeting with Oklahoma (the Longhorns lost to Kansas and Michigan at home).  Shaka Smart’s team is also 2-1 against AP Top 25 opponents at home this season, defeating #16 TCU (99-98 in 2OT) and #8 Texas Tech (67-58). Despite being ranked, Oklahoma is an underdog in Austin (Texas -3).

Junior forward and Tulane transfer Dylan Osetkowski has become a dominant force for the Longhorns this season and leads the team in scoring with 14.2 PPG.  True freshman Mohamed Bamba set the overall and freshman season marks for blocked shots in the loss to the Red Raiders earlier in the week.  Bamba recorded 7 blocks and enters Saturday’s game against Oklahoma 95 blocks.  He ranks second nationally in blocks per game (4.52) and has recorded five double-doubles in his last six contests.

Norman native and true freshman point guard Trae Young is averaging 30.3 PPG for Lon Kruger’s Sooner team.  Young, a five-star recruit, is as athletic as they come and will keep Texas on their toes all night.  Junior guard Christian James and freshman forward Brady Manek lead a supporting cast for Oklahoma, averaging 11.9 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.  Oklahoma squeaked out a 98-96 win over Baylor in Norman on Tuesday to improve to 6-3 in Big 12 play. Trae Young finished with 44 points against the Bears.

The Longhorns and Sooners will play in front of a national audience on ESPN, with tip time taking place at 5:15 PM CST.

holy crap....as a basketball coach I am mortified at the lack of transition defense by this Horns team.  Piss poor awareness and effort. I'e counted at least 16 points (could be more) because Texas doesn't get back and cover the weak side.  Difference in the ballgame.

Horns end the game on a 21-8 run and win 79-74!

Dylan needs to go back to his old hair style. He's shooting way under .500, probably closer to .333 and that may be generous, with his current style.

Coleman had a really good game especially after going through what he did at the end of the Tech game.

Roach is a stud, love his hustle and game!

Huge win for the Horns. I haven't seen the Drum that full and heard it that loud since I was in college. I knew something was different walking up to the arena when scalpers kept asking me for extra tickets, and clusters of students walked by me annoyed they couldn't get in. All the rows were filled up, all the way to the top. Amazing to see the potential atmosphere for basketball games when the fan base shows up.

    • If Sam can play and be effective and he's not risking further injury then he needs to play. Shane had a 100 yard RB, a NFL receiver to throw to, and a weak Baylor defense and the offense couldn't score in the second half. That's not a good sign  in a hostile environment. Gundy and Oklahoma State has beat us the last 6 out of the last eight years. They seem to have some help extra help from Big 12 officials.   Was The Texas-OSU Game Rigged? • Man thanks for that summary. I'd bet both CJ and LJH are gone. CJ has cleared up his deficiencies and LJH is just too interesting a player. Bother were recruited by Strong. Both will go 3rd round or up IMO and probably fine with that.  I hope McCoy and Smith are licking their chops.
    • When everyone's seasons are complete there will only be a handful of teams that are undefeated and/or only have one loss. While we still have some work to do, we can make a strong case for being one of those teams. Where we are now can only help to get us in the playoffs or a ny6 bowl. Let's just worry about the teams on our schedule and we'll be fine.
    • I’m putting a flip pick in for Kennedy Lewis this morning. If Texas pushes like we think they will then I think this gets done.
    • Heard last night that Texas could push for Kennedy Lewis, but hadn’t heard the same on Powell. The numbers are going to be really interesting. Especially at WR.
