What’s Your Wish? The White Envelope... It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscription. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past 10 years or so. It all began because my husband hated Christmas---oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the “craziness” of Christmas – where he had a tendency to sit back and do WAY too much thinking, about his future, his family, what he wanted to be when he grew up, so to say. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to do something for him. The inspiration came in an unusual way – I was watching a magician on television doing a “trick” when it struck me… I asked him to write down for me, every New Year’s Day, what he wanted from his life. It didn’t matter what he put down – this was for him. And I didn’t want to see it. Then, every Thanksgiving weekend, when we put up the Christmas tree, I’d ask him to open it and see what it said. And then I’d ask him, “Are you closer to reaching it? If not, what can I do to help?” After a couple of years of this, my husband turned to me and said, “Yes, you can help. You see – I want to own my own business. I’ve always realized I could build equity for our family better this way – plus get away from the corporate nonsense I deal with every day. But if we do this, we’re going to have to tighten our belts in the short-term. Are you ready to help?” I nearly keeled over from shock. I had become accustomed to our nice little life – and knowing my husband was able to make a good salary and support our family well. I worked as well, but was also busy with the kids, so we depended largely on his salary. “What are you considering?” I asked, trying to sound supportive. “Well, I’m looking at buying a franchise,” he said. “I’ve been working with a franchise consultant, and he has helped me understand my skills and what franchise companies would be right for me. I’m in the process of investigating several right now – and one, in particular, is looking like a really good fit for us.” “Oh. Crap,” I mumbled, and then quickly began thinking of ways I could submarine this radical thinking that was going to destroy the security of our family. “Have you spoken with your Dad about this?” “Yes, I have,” my husband said, “and he asked me if I had the ‘stuff’ to make it work?” “Well, do you?“ I asked. “I don’t know,” my husband replied, “but I DO know that if I don’t see this through, I’ll never be happy, because I will have never seen through what I thought I could do with myself in life.” “Well, obviously this is important to you.” I offered. “Let’s share it with family when they’re here for the holidays – and see what they have to say,” hoping in my heart they’d help me out on this issue. “We can do that,” he said, “but I don’t need another WIPE-OUT. You know, WELL-INTENTIONED PERSONS OFFERING UNINFORMED THOUGHTS? My Dad has been doing that to me my whole life. It took me years to understand that he didn’t mean me harm, but that he wished for my safety, and that suggesting I avoid risk was his way of doing it.” “I’ve already spoken with a lot of people,” he went on to say. “And I’ve learned that once you begin to talk about your desires to own your own business, you will get all sorts of comments back that don’t always reflect an understanding of who you really are, and certainly don’t reflect a knowledge of the business you are investigating. Be it your father, or your “know-it-all” sister-in-law, or your neighbor, or your co-worker. They all seem to have an opinion. I have learned I needed to understand two things. First, as I said, I’ve learned that my loved ones have my “safety” at heart – not my “success” – so they are hardly in the position to advise me to do something that would put me or my family at any risk at all. Secondly, many can make a comment that may appear to have my best interest at heart, but that person doesn’t have the details I have in investigating a business. I guess I’ve learned this is something I simply have to do on my own. Wow, I thought. He’s got me pegged. “OK, then what can I do here?” “Join me in this investigation process,” he requested. “Work with me to learn about these businesses. And then we can decide together – if this one particular business isn’t right, it won’t change how I feel. I still want to do this.” Well, we did exactly what he asked me to…and 7 years ago, we purchased a franchise business together. It has met his personal fulfillment needs – and neither of us has ever regretted a minute. But why still the “white envelope,” you say? Do I still have him fill it out every year? “No, I don’t. These days it is no more than an empty envelope. But it’s a constant reminder to me to that I almost “blew it. That I was thinking about what I thought was right for me, not for my husband, or for our family. And that reminder is the best message I can receive every holiday”. **************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed. Study: 71 Percent Of Employees Are Looking For New Positions By Gene Marks Washington Post The vast majority of 17,000 U.S. workers in 19 industries who participated in a survey conducted by the nonprofit group Mental Health America and the Faas Foundation said they are unhappy with their jobs. They are so unhappy that 71 percent also said that they are looking to change employers. So what gives? Two big reasons are cited, according to this report in The Ladders. Employers, the study found, are not giving the recognition that most employees want. Forty-five percent of respondents said they “rarely or never” get the money they deserve and 44 percent believe that they are “always or often” overlooked. Sixty-four percent say their supervisors don’t give them enough support and a majority of the participants are resentful of their co-workers. So much for teamwork. The study also shows that most employees are just plain stressed out. Almost two-thirds of those who responded believe that their job is having “a significant impact on their mental and behavioral health,” and 63 percent said that they have “always, often or sometimes” taken part “in unhealthy behaviors such as drinking or crying regularly.” All of these job stresses – brought on by unreasonable employer demands and excessive responsibilities – are cited as potential reasons approximately 120,000 workplace deaths occur annually, according to researchers at both Harvard and Stanford universities. Too much stress in the work environment may also be contributing to increased absenteeism as well as mental and behavioral problems. “We know that employees who are over stressed and under-supported can significantly impact the people around them and a company’s success,” Paul Gionfriddo, president and chief executive of Mental Health America, told The Ladders. Will changing jobs fix these problems for an employee, when so many already seem unhappy? The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful …job security is an illusion…your work-life and income is being dictated by someone else…your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?” Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. So, most people simply get overwhelmed with fear, uncertainty and doubt. And, when people are unsure as to what, how, and when, they STOP. The paragraph above could have described me in 2001. From an early age, I always wanted to be self-employed, but after spending 25 years in corporate Human Resources roles, I had no idea how to achieve my dream. I possessed a belief that there was a business that would provide a better lifestyle for me…out there somewhere. But, I didn’t know how to get from here (corporate employment) to there (The Dream). I was feeling over-whelmed and fearful. But, I didn’t stop. Instead, I obtained the services of a franchise consultant who guided me through the process. By Brian Tracy Many years ago I began asking the question, “Why is it that some people are more successful than others?” The most important answer surprised me, as it surprises most people. It is simple. Your success is based on what you do, the results you get, and how quickly and efficiently you achieve those results. It is not based on what you say, wish, hope, or intend to do at some time in the future. Success is only based on what you are doing right now in this moment. As Henry Ford said, “You can't build a reputation on what you're going to do.” So how do you get more done and become more successful? Just Shut Up and Do It! Fully 95 percent of what you do, or fail to do, is determined by your habits. Your actions are determined by your habits of belief—the way you are programmed as a result of your lifetime of experience—and your habits of behavior—what you are accustomed to doing or not doing. The biggest obstacle to success is that people have negative habits, sometimes unconsciously, that hold them back, year after year, from realizing their full potential. The good news is that all habits, first of thought and then of behavior, are learned. Because your habits are learned, they can be unlearned, and replaced with new, positive, constructive habits that enable you to get going, keep going, and do great work that gets you paid more and promoted faster. DEVELOP NEW, BETTER HABITS Habits are developed by taking in new information that’s either positive or negative for us and then repeating actions based on that information until actions become automatic. Once the habit is locked in you respond automatically, neither questioning nor explaining to yourself what you have decided to do. The worst habits of all are based on your self- limiting beliefs. These are areas where you believe yourself to be limited in some way even though it may not be true. But as a result, you act as if it was true and it then becomes true for you. The old saying is, “You are not what you believe you are, but what you believe, you are.” Challenge Your Beliefs The starting point of greater success is for you to take some time to challenge the automatic assumptions you make that may be holding you back from success. Some people believe they are lacking in intelligence because they didn’t get good grades in school. Then they find out that some of the most successful people in the most complex industries also did poorly in school. Some people are unsuccessful because they do not believe they are creative, self- disciplined, good time-managers, punctual, or capable of learning and applying new things. They say, “That’s just the way I am.” They actually think that this is a reason for not growing and improving. The fact is that most self- limiting beliefs are not true. They are based on information that you have taken in; sometimes they come from the opinions or criticisms of others, sometimes from something as simple as reading your horoscope. The Brake on Your Potential The worst of all self-limiting beliefs is the fear of failure. This is the fear of loss, poverty, mistakes, or not achieving a goal that you have set for yourself. People who are preoccupied with the fear of failure continually look for reasons why something cannot be done, why it’s a bad idea, or why they may lose their time and money. The fear of failure, like all fears, paralyzes behavior, clouds thinking, and causes a person to feel like the proverbial deer in headlights. TAMING ELEPHANTS In my seminars, I often ask, “How do you train an Indian elephant?” At one time, Indian elephants were the “battle tanks” of the Maharajas. Not only did they carry boxes of bowman and spear throwers on their backs, but they were also violent and aggressive, attacking the enemy and impaling them on their sharpened tusks. They were so terrifying and fearless that enemy armies would run away when they were confronted by these elephants. Today, these same elephants are beasts of burden. They calmly and peacefully plow the fields, haul logs, do what their masters tell them to do, and then stand around quietly in their corrals, waiting for the next day and more work. They have completely lost their ferocity and their ability to strike fear into the heart of the enemy. How did this happen? The Training Begins When the elephant was a baby the owner would take the little elephant away from its mother and tie its leg with a strong rope to a post driven deep into the ground. The baby elephant would struggle and try to get away to get back to its mother, crying and bleating and protesting. But to no avail. The rope around its leg was too strong and the post was driven too deep. Eventually, the baby elephant would give up struggling. Each day, the owner would take the baby elephant away and tie it to a post for several hours. In almost no time at all, the baby elephant would accept that, when it was tied to a post, it was helpless. The baby elephant developed the greatest malaise of the modern world, what psychologists call learned helplessness. .The Elephant Gives Up When the elephant grew up into a five-ton beast, the largest land animal in the world, all the owner had to do was tie a rope the size of a dog leash around the elephant’s leg and it would immediately become passive and stop moving or struggling. The owner could then tie the other end of this rope to a tent post driven a few inches into the ground. The elephant, capable of breaking through fences and knocking down houses, would simply stand and wait quietly until the owner came back to take him to work. As children, the same thing happens to us. At an early age, our parents begin to say to us words like “No!” or “Stop that,” or “Get away from there!” or “Don’t touch that!” Sometimes the parent would back up these words with spanks or other kinds of physical punishment. The growing child would soon start to feel small, incompetent, incapable, weak, and afraid to try anything new or different. THE ROOT OF HELPLESSNESS Most people have had these childhood experiences. Just like the elephant, when you grow up whenever you are confronted with something new, different, unexpected, or unsure your natural reaction is the same, “I can’t! I can’t! I can’t!” This fear of failure then holds you back from trying new things, taking risks, moving out of your comfort zone, and thinking outside the box. Instead of thinking of all the ways you could benefit and grow from trying or doing something different, you only think of the possible downside and the negative things that might happen. Like the Indian elephant, you become passive. This is the state of mind of fully 80 percent of the population. SET BIG GOALS Here’s a question for you: Would you like to be happy, healthy, popular, thin, and rich? Most people say, “What a dumb question! Of course I would like to be happy, healthy, popular, thin, and rich.” You think you do, but in your heart of hearts you probably don’t believe that it’s possible for you. How can you tell? By looking at what you are doing. If you sincerely want to achieve these great goals, you would be out there working on them all day every day and nothing could stop you from achieving them. YOUR ACTIONS TELL THE TRUTH It is not what you say, wish, hope, or intend that matters, it is only what you do. Your actions on an hour by hour, minute by minute basis tell you and everyone around you who you really are and what you really want. You are what you are and where you are today because of all of your previous choices up until now. You cannot change the past, but you can change the future. You can accomplish more and different things in the future by making better choices in the present. THE KEY TO SUCCESS Since 95 percent of what you do, positive or negative, is determined by your habits, the secret to creating a wonderful future for yourself is to develop new habits that are consistent with the person you want to be and the things you want to accomplish. The truth is that bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with. Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with. The wonderful discovery is that once you develop a new, positive, life-enhancing habit, it soon becomes automatic and easy. It even becomes harder to revert to a negative habit than to practice a better one because of the feelings of happiness and personal satisfaction that the new habit gives you. ********************************************************************************* You desire to be self-employed… What is preventing you from moving towards that dream? This according to a new survey released today by Morning Consult on behalf of the International Franchise Association (IFA). What’s so Great About a Franchise? Many people dream of owning their own business. It sounds fun and exciting, and it truly can be. However, there are different types of business ownership that come with different perks and pitfalls. Independent Startups, for example, involve huge commitments: finances, time, and energy. Frankly, these startups depend on luck more than any other business model. It is high-risk, high-reward, but if the business fails, the losses can be devastating. This is why so many employees wishing to break away from the daily grind of a job tend to shy away from venturing out on their own to be their own boss. With no disrespect to startups that made it—Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, etc.—much of the success of these big names involved a large amount of good fortune. Of course, there were genius entrepreneurs behind them, and whatever they did, it worked, but not everyone has the resources, nor are they willing to risk it all on a new business or new idea. In most cases, that is a wise decision. Unfortunately, many people wishing to be their own boss are afraid to become business owners because they immediately equate business ownership with the startup. This perception is analogous to avoiding the ocean because you are afraid of Jaws. If you’re interested in becoming a business owner but can’t fathom starting from scratch, franchising is an excellent solution. In fact, Brad Sugars, owner of the world’s No. 1 business coaching firm in the world, strongly recommends franchising as a first, or even second or third business for the new entrepreneur. Why franchising? “It offers the right mix of independence and proven strategy,†Sugars said, “It has the strength of a tried-and-true business model with the freedom that comes from working for yourself and managing your individual franchise, within certain parameters, as you see fit.†Furthermore, there are thousands of franchise opportunities available, franchising is becoming more popular than ever, and the investment can be relatively small, depending on what type of franchise you choose. Most importantly, of all significant business models, the franchise is the least likely to fail because it is strongly backed by the franchisor, who offers support and has a vested interest in the success of each individual franchise. Furthermore, franchising, as a general business model is expected to continue to grow steadily in 2017 and on. In the course of my business, I am often asked “When I buy a franchise, what do I get for my money?†The short answer is “a business model.†A business model is a framework for creating economic value, in other words, it’s a system for making money. Many first time entrepreneurs confuse the investment in a franchise as a purchase of physical property, when what a franchise represents is intellectual property. The capital equipment, inventory, furnishings, fixtures or the cost of building out the location is part of any business be it franchised or not. The real value in a franchise is that you get a fully formed, proven business model. An effective business model is the difference between success and failure in a business. The old maxim that most businesses fail because they are under-capitalized needs more adequate explanation. Most of these businesses wouldn’t have been considered under-capitalized if they would have had an adequate business plan. Every year thousands of well capitalized startups with brilliant ideas for a product or service fail. This not for lack of money, it is because they eventually burn up all of their cash while trying to develop a system for delivering their product / service into the hands of a paying customer. All business models are initially perfected by trial and error – this is a very costly process that most small businesses cannot afford to live through. That is why so many private startups fail where franchises succeed. The costs associated with perfecting a business model will almost always eclipse the cost of paying a franchise fee. The average franchise fee is about $35k. Most starts up waste more than that in advertising costs alone while they experiment with different marketing strategies. The advantages of having the learning and cost curves reduced to a fraction of the “learn as you go†method, are very significant to say the least. The other cost component of a franchise is the royalty. This is a fee paid for on-going support which of course includes continuous improvement of the business model, access to vendor discounts, product R&D, marketing and advertising programs, etc. Typical support royalties are between 6% and 8% of revenue. This fee usually pays for itself due to the savings realized when the franchisee purchases goods and services for the business at below market, national account rates. Additionally, most franchisees will experience much higher sales than they would as a private company – greatly in excess of 8% higher - because of the franchisor’s well designed marketing strategy. A franchise may not be right for everyone and they are certainly not all created equal, but a good business model can lower the risk factor and accelerate one’s potential for long term success. As always, the key is finding the right match between the franchise model and the owner-operator. So… Chasing Corporate Employment Is, In Reality, A Bigger Risk Than Owning A Franchise. Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. So, why do so few who say they want business ownership finally end up owning a business? There are a number of reasons. One primary reason is the misconception regarding the security of corporate employment. With all the layoffs in 2008-2009 and still occur on a more limited basis, it makes one question job security. With companies downsizing, rightsizing and even capsizing, there is no security, except that which you create for yourself. Over the past several years, many individuals have found it increasingly difficult to keep their job and / or secure other suitable employment. Particularly, those who may be more “matureâ€, or have been at a high income level. A number of my friends and / or former associates from my previous life in corporate America lost their jobs and career when they were in their mid 50s. Almost all are either unemployed or grossly under-employed. Several years ago when my wife was 59 years old, she lost her human resources job at the company where she had been a loyal and dedicated employee for 20+ years. Today, she is under-employed and working at a wage rate about 55% of her former salary. Make no mistake, corporate loyalty is a one-way street. And, job security behind the corporate curtain is a myth. The work-place and labor market are in a state of flux…they are transforming the nature and make-up of jobs. The Federal government and a number of leading economists have reported that most of the jobs that have been “cut†are not likely to return. The job market today exhibits three (3) frustrating and consistent themes… High paying jobs are increasingly hard to find. The average job lasts 18-24 months… So, how much security is being provided by corporate employment? Executives are being asked to do substantially more with fewer resources. As the 21st century job market continues to constrict, people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving young people, mid-career types, those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue self-employment options. Therefore, a number of these folks have decided to pursue small business ownership as the “new†career of choice. Today, creating your own job has become the new path to job security. Perhaps you have the perfect job and perfect life, but do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Whether they have been fired, downsized, retired, or just want to be their own boss, they all have the same thought…â€There must be something better!†Business ownership / self-employment is not the right avenue for everyone. For those folks who are truly ready and capable of being a business owner, they must determine the business model that will best fit their goals and needs. The most common business models are independent business; franchise; and business opportunity. Below are brief descriptions of the different types of franchises and business opportunity. Single-unit Franchises…A franchisee has the right to operate one franchise unit. Most franchisees enter the world of franchising by owning one unit. It is a great way to get in and understand the system before taking on more units. Territory: The franchisee may have a small radius of exclusive territory to operate within. If it is a retail store, the area of exclusivity may be a two or three mile radius around the store. If it is a home-based business the area may consist of a few specific zip codes. Level of participation: The franchisee is very involved with almost all operations of this type. Even if it is a semi-absentee owned business, the franchisee will want to be present at the business and be as hands-on as possible. Typical liquid capital required: $25,000 to $60,000 initial out-of-pocket investment required on a total investment of $50,000 to $200,000. Multi-unit Franchises…The franchisee acquires more than one unit of the franchise, usually at reduced franchise fees. The risk is lower because the franchisee can take advantage of the economies-of-scale theory; by spreading costs across multi-units, the locations may be more successful. A good sign of the health of the franchise is if many of the franchisees are multi-unit owners. Territory: There is usually no exclusive territory where the franchises must be set up. The franchisee may have one unit in one part of town with a surrounding radius of exclusivity, and another unit in another part of town 15 miles away or even in another county with its exclusive radius of operation. Level of participation: The franchisee is less involved with each of the units operations, but will be managing multiple operations and will need to have some level of supervision in each unit. If many units are opened, a general manager and additional administrative and training staff may be needed. The franchisee is more of a general manager when many units are involved. Typical liquid capital required: $50,000 to $70,000 initial out-of-pocket capital is required to take care of mostly the initial franchise fees. The rest of the investment is usually financed when each unit is opened. Area Development Franchises…This license usually grants the franchisee the right to open a certain number of franchises in a given area. There is usually a production schedule where the franchisee must open a certain number of franchises during a certain period. The franchisee has an exclusive area where no other franchisees can be allowed to open a franchise. Territory: The franchisee maintains an exclusive geographic territory as long as the opening schedule is maintained. The territories range from a small city to parts or all of a larger city. Level of participation: The franchisee will be very involved in the beginning stages of the first location to make sure it is successful. The franchisee will also need to be looking for qualified real estate to open the next few locations. Once several locations are open, the franchisee will need additional assistance to manage several units. Typical liquid capital required: $60,000 to $120,000 initially to secure the area, pay all franchise fees and have additional start-up capital. The franchisee will then need to be able to finance the rest of the start-up costs for each of the franchises, as they open. Master Franchises…A Master Franchisee, sometimes called a Regional Developer, has the rights to a larger area than that of an Area Developer. The Master Franchisee, in addition to opening franchises at a much reduced franchise fee and royalty, can also sell unit franchises, multi-unit franchises and area development franchises and make a nice return on the sale. The master usually receives a part of the royalty and franchise fee paid by each franchisee. There may be additional income available from distribution of products through the franchisees in the area and possibly even some real estate interest. The master becomes somewhat of a sub-franchisor for the area, without having experienced all the trial and error the original franchisor did. The master franchisee will usually want to open and operate at least one unit (pilot location), for income and use as a training center. Master franchises are not offered as readily as the other levels of franchising. However, when they are available they usually sell quickly. The income available from a master franchise is extremely lucrative. The initial investment is low compared to the type of value you can build in the master franchise area. The flexibility is also the greatest at this level. Territory: Usually is a large metropolitan area, an entire state or even several states or country. It is an exclusive area and will remain exclusive as long as the master franchisee meets the development schedule of franchises in the territory. Level or participation: The master franchisee will usually set up and operate at least one unit and use a manger to manage it while working on selling other “sub-franchises†and assisting them in operating properly. Very rarely is a master franchisee “hands on†in a unit franchise. They tend to spend more of their time operating like a business consultant or coach to their franchisees to help them become successful. Typical liquid capital required: $100,000 to $250,000 is needed to acquire the territory and for initial liquid capital to start the area. Financing will be secured for the start-up of the unit franchise. “Business Opportunityâ€â€¦Like a franchise, a “business opportunity†will have a start-up package, operational methodology, training and on-going support. A business opportunity charges an upfront fee that is comparable to a franchise fee, but there are no on-going royalty fees charged by the business opportunity company. A unique difference between a franchise and a business opportunity is a business opportunity does not have the rules and reporting requirements associated with franchise ownership. The quality of on-going support will vary widely across the spectrum of business opportunities. Some will provide very little, while others provide extensive continuing support and training. Business opportunities may be more suitable for experienced business people who desire the advantage of having access to a proven system with an organization to lean on for support from both the corporate staff and the other owners as well, but still have the opportunity to “do things their own wayâ€. Google promoted people quickly. Some college graduates who had distinguished themselves had been promoted every quarter for more than a year, and were managers, senior managers, even directors. And I wanted the same type of trajectory. So I resolved to work as much as possible to achieve it. At the outset, I began to take on other projects. Small things like an extra research project. Or helping a friend with a presentation. One day, when I thought we needed a basic CRM for our team, I stayed up late into the morning building one, called Toothpaste. Pretty soon, the extra work began to consume a lot more time. I began to sleep less, going to bed on consistently after midnight, sometimes sleeping only a few hours. I doubled down on productivity tools looking to do more in less time. I began to focus on reducing interruptions and tallied each time someone interrupted me. Amidst the growing workload, I wanted to keep up an exercise regimen similar to the one I had on the crew team at school. The earliest San Francisco to Mountain View bus arrived too late to work out for more than an hour to be in the office before 730. So when I happened to meet Marty, who ran the Google bus program, I asked if there might be an earlier shuttle. The next week, a bus began arriving at my Google bus stop around 4am. I would climb aboard and fall asleep in the back row. Somewhere along the way, we would stop to pick up one of the Google chefs, rising early to prepare breakfast. I might arrive around 5, workout for about 90-120 minutes and then back to my desk. Weekends I tried to catch up on sleep, but often, I worked most of Saturday and Sunday too. I was a flywheel spinning out of control. On Christmas Eve 2005, my family admitted me to the emergency room. Bacterial pneumonia. Everyone told me my lifestyle was unsustainable and it had to change. Especially my manager. This was the fourth time in four quarters that I had been to the ER. Since then, I’ve learned a few things about how to avoid burnout: I am responsible for setting boundaries. Work time, sleep time, family time, you time. If I don’t set them properly, things get unbalanced very quickly. Being productive isn’t about doing more and more in the same amount of time. It’s about doing only the most important things well. And either saying no to the other things or finding another way for them to get done. I can’t win a marathon by thinking of it as 26 mile long sprints, or a week as 5 day-long sprints. Loved ones are good judges of when things are in and out of balance, and in my case, my wife helped me find more balance. Taking time off is essential. Vacations, yes, but also nights and weekends. At the beginning of each year, I try to remember that feeling of being out of balance, of being in the hospital with pneumonia, to reflect on how I should be spending time this year. Introduction… Unchain the Elephant Several years ago, I had the privilege to go on safari outside Nairobi, Kenya. As I ventured into the vast, unregulated openness of the Masai Mara, I experienced life from a completely new perspective. I witnessed the grace of a pack of gazelles, the migration of the wildebeest, and the clever stealth of the cheetah. But the most memorable encounter by far was when I crested a hill and unexpectedly came face-to-face with the overwhelming size and unparalleled raw power of an untamed elephant. This was not a petting zoo elephant quietly behaving in a crowded room. This enormous elephant was wild and completely unrestrained to explore, to discover, and to enjoy the beauty of its natural habitat. How did this massive, powerful, free creature succumb to a life tethered to a chain in a circus tent? When an elephant is born into captivity, the owner ties the animal to a tree or post with a thick chain to prevent the 250-pound infant from escaping. During the first few weeks of his life, the small elephant tests the chain that binds him, again and again, in an attempt to free himself and wander as his nature urges him to do. His efforts, however, are no match for steel links. Over the course of a few weeks, he eventually learns that his resources are no match for the hardiness of the chain. He gives up any further attempts to free himself, and thus relegates himself to a life within a small circle. As an adult elephant conditioned by a past experience, he can now be tethered to a small tree with the thinnest of ropes or, in some cases, no rope at all. He makes no attempts to wander because he carries with him, for life, the belief that he does not possess the power to break the ties that bind him. The adult elephant could easily snap the rope or uproot the tree to which it is attached, but he makes no such effort, because early in life, he was taught that true freedom was not available to him. For the remainder of his life, he is tame and nothing like the captivating, powerful creature he was born to be. Can you sympathize with this elephant? Failure Is Not Trying Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx Shapewear... As a young girl, Sara Blakely’s father would ask: “What did you fail at today?†Growing up failure was viewed as a good thing. If Sara didn’t fail at something that day, her father would be duly disappointed. This enthusiasm towards trying new things, regardless of the outcome, helped Blakely avoid the paralyzing fear of failure that prevents many people from reaching beyond their comfort zones. In her 20s, and frustrated by the lack of undergarments to wear with white pants, Sara Blakely’s idea for Spanx was born when she cut the feet off of a pair of pantyhose. When I started the Company I was 52 years old. I had diabetes, lost my gall bladder and most of my thyroid gland. But, I was convinced that the best was ahead of me. Recently, I read a research report indicating that over 75% of the population is NOT engaged in their work. When told this finding and statistic, many people will just nod knowingly and think…â€Yeah...that sounds about right!†If you are one of the 75%, do you ever wonder…â€whyâ€? Why is it that so many of us end up settling for less of a personal and professional lifestyle than we deserve? Let’s take a moment and break this down… Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Did you know the average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime? Wow, that’s a long time to be unhappy. What do most of us do each morning after we wake up? Well, for many of us we go on autopilot through a set of highly routine, automatic behaviors. For example, you always wake up on the same side of the bed, go to the sink and look in the mirror, shower, and go through your automatic routine without even thinking. Next, you get in your truck / car and zone out as you commute to work without even thinking about it. At work, you do the same routines that you have memorized so well. You see the same people, who push your same emotional buttons, which causes you to have the same reactions and thoughts about those people and your work and life. Then when the day is done, you hurry home for dinner so you can rush to cook, eat, and watch TV, then you scurry to bed and do it all over again. Unfortunately, many folks are so miserable with their work-life they go home and argue with their spouse, ignore the kids, kick the dog(s) / cat(s) and / or turn to illicit “pleasuresâ€. And, they continue to be personally and professionally unhappy and unfulfilled. However, there is only one who actually started a franchise from scratch. That isTafa Jefferson, former offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears. During my recent conversation with the former NFL player he asked me, “Tom, do you know what NFL stands for?†Naturally, to show how smart I am, I shot back, “National Football League.†He said, “Nope, NFL stands for Not For Long!†Many NFL careers are ended early due to injury, and Jefferson’s career was no different. It ended when he suffered unsustainable ankle damage, and he was relieved of his position even sooner than he expected. But his preparation in school allowed him to not miss a beat. In college, Jefferson understood football was just a means to an end. The young athlete recognized that being a professional football player is short lived, regardless of your age. It’s just too hard on the body to play for 20 years. He knew that someday he would need a plan B. So, while in school, he learned all he could about business and entrepreneurship. Jefferson had a passion for entrepreneurship because of his father’s influence. Jefferson Sr. was an entrepreneur and didn’t rely on anyone to make a living -- he made his own living. That’s where the younger Jefferson learned “hustle.†Another business inspiration for Jefferson was his mom. She was a caregiver, and he saw the satisfaction she got from providing that service to people in need. With a business degree and the life experiences he had growing up with his parents, Jefferson started an in-home healthcare business within months of leaving the NFL. Jefferson’s company, Amada Senior Care, is a national franchise that provides in-home care to seniors to help them age at home. He said he is grooming his franchise partners to be the “navy seals†of senior care. He is looking for talented, hard-working men and woman who are not afraid of doing great work. One of the tenants of Amada Care is to be confidently humble. “Business is a contact sport, much like football,†Jefferson said. “You must be confidant, show up to do your best every day, or otherwise, the competitor will eat you alive.†He added that humility is a key core value of his company. Jefferson says he and his franchise owners are honored and grateful to be able to give this type of care to individuals and families of folks who need the help at home. And, living a life in service of others helps his employees do well in their own lives. His father always told him “You must treat your business like a farm. You can’t be afraid of rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty. A farmer has to prep the land and get rid of tree stumps and rocks. It’s hard work to get started. but it must be done. Without preparation, nothing will grow, including a new business. Once the ground is ready, then plant the seeds. Keep nurturing the farm every day and tend to the crops. Don’t miss a day. Just like in business, it’s all about consistency. Before you can harvest the fruits and vegetables, you must be patient, very patient.†Jefferson continued: “People these days are too much in a hurry to get results. Anything that has any value comes with time and patience -- especially in business. The key to success in business or sports is to be prepared and then practice, practice, and then practice some more. When your number is called, you must be ready to stand up and play your position to the best of your ability.†To be the best at something takes some sacrifice. Famed basketball coach Bobby Knight said, “Most people have the will to win, few have the will to prepare to win.†Jefferson said his favorite quote is from the late Muhammad Ali, who said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.†Jefferson’s football training was not wasted. He believes that owning a business requires some of the same attributes as playing pro football. The 10-year franchise veteran says that the five lessons taken from football and applied in business are: 1. Be Coachable. Be someone who likes to engage people and have a sales talent, perhaps. Jefferson loves people who have failed at something. Those people are now coachable. A great franchisee or business owner, for that matter, must be open to being coached. 2. Heart. Business owners, like professional football players, need to have heart. In any business, the owner needs to have empathy for the customer. How else can you anticipate their needs? 3. Tenacity. Tenacity is the willingness to hustle and get it done. You must be a peak performer and in top shape to be a winner in your game with the stamina to finish strong. 4. Teamwork. People who are teammates will push each other to do well. People who are committed to the good fight of building a brand will always help each other when the going gets rough -- someone who is willing to “stay in the pocket†when the rush is on. 5. Strategy. Strategy is paramount. Your competitors can’t know what your plays are. Your plays are the only differentiator for your business. They are the secret sauce of your company. The most important piece of advice Jefferson offers to people who are starting a business or buying into a franchise is to look for something that will be sustainable. “Look at our business," Jefferson said. "I picked serving baby boomers because I knew there would be a silver tsunami, and I want to be well-positioned when it comes ashore.†He added, “If it’s all about money for you, then your business will suffer. You have to put passion first. As the 21st century "professional" job market continues to constrict, corporate America "refugees and "wannabe refugees" are refocusing their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. Franchising Offers the Best of Both Worlds by Robert Addie Many, if not most, people dream of owning their own business. It sounds fun and exciting, and it truly can be. However, there are different types of business ownership that come with different perks and pitfalls. Startups, for example, involve huge commitments: finances, time, and energy. Frankly, startups depend on luck more than any other business model. It is high-risk, high-reward, but if the business fails, the losses can be devastating. This is why so many employees wishing to break away from the daily grind of a job tend to shy away from venturing out on their own to be their own boss. For many, the one thing holding them back from pursuing their dream of small business ownership is the fear they don’t have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Having helped over 11,000 people open small businesses, Guidant can attest to the fact that individuals of all backgrounds and personalities can and do make great entrepreneurs. What does it take to be an entrepreneur? You may be asking yourself this question if you’re considering opening your own business. Fortunately, diversity is key on Main Street and there isn’t one specific personality type or set of skills that make an entrepreneur great. If you’re hoping to find out if small business ownership is right for you, Guidant CEO, David Nilssen, explains how anyone can be an entrepreneur and shares the three common characteristics that help small business owners succeed. David Nilssen: As I travel the country talking to people about small business ownership, one of the most common questions I’m asked is, “How do I know if I’m an entrepreneur?†I think that’s a question that many people ask themselves over their lifetime, but very few people take the action necessary to understand whether it’s true or not. My personal belief is that anyone can be an entrepreneur. There have been a lot of articles and videos that have been created over time that define the common characteristics of an entrepreneur. The reality is, most of the entrepreneurs that I know are very, very different, but I would say that there are three common characteristics that have helped them be successful over time. The first is a thirst for learning. An intellectual curiosity as the business throws its challenges, and as obstacles appear, the ability to overcome them by seeking knowledge. The second is resilience. One of my favorite quotes from Mike Tyson is “everyone has got a plan until they get punched in the face.†And it’s true about business too. We create these business plans and we put them into work — the question is what do we do when we find out that once we wrote the business plan it was wrong. Do we get back up and fight the good fight? Do we recover quickly? It’s all about resilience. And then the last is simply, discipline. The greatest football teams in the world don’t win constantly because of one great play. They win because they are willing to do the blocking and tackling necessary, and attacking each game with fervor to win the ball game ultimately. The same thing is true for an entrepreneur. While we get distracted by the shiny new toy, the most important thing that we can do is to focus on those things that are important and not urgent. The last I would just say, fear in general is something that every entrepreneur feels, and it’s not something we should worry about if it’s there. That fear of mediocrity, that fear of failing, that’s a powerful motivator for a small business, and quite frankly if you embrace it, it could be what makes you great. ************************************************************************************************ Fears that Drown Dreams… It’s Not The Right Time While there are certainly legitimate reasons why a person may not become a business owner, I will highlight a few of the primary reasons cited by people who say they would like to own a business, but haven’t made the leap. I will also offer some thoughts on how to overcome the fear and progress towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners. It’s Not the Right Time…â€As soon as the mortgage is paid; as soon as the kids are through college; as soon as I get my buyout at work; as soon as I learn everything there is to know about it; as soon as 2 + 2+ 2 = 4. As soon as I am absolutely sure that this venture will have zero risk and my success is guaranteed.†These thoughts are absolutely paralyzing and debilitating. They are very real thoughts, and most are legitimate thoughts. But none-the-less, they are only thoughts and not reality, and do impede forward progress. I would like to share a quote from Goethe that seems to strike at the very heart of this issue: “There is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless splendid plans-that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and magic in it. Begin it now.†Nike has made the slogan, “Just Do It†famous. That attitude doesn’t suit everyone, but perhaps it should. I believe it DOES characterize those successful people we aspire to be like. The point is that the time to act is very likely now, when the opportunity is present, as opposed to some ill-defined “when…then I will…†Stated another way by Marsha Sinetar, “Intentions count as nothing if we do not translate them into action.†Are you going to sit on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners? Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life beginsâ€. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that 82% of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only 5% will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first stepâ€. Please allow me to describe a common scenario…You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. Real-life couples share their tips for juggling love and business. No. 1: “Figure out who has strengths to do which task. It’s like running a household – one person may be great at yard work and the other person may be great at cooking. You have to figure that out in the business as well,†says Arianne Bennett, who co-owns Washington, D.C.-based Amsterdam Falafelshop with her husband Scott. No. 2: “Understand each other’s work styles and take that into consideration for how to meet in the middle and compromise,†says Homezada co-founder Beth Dodson, who runs the San Francisco-based company with her husband John Bodrozic. No. 3: “Make sure you’re on the same page and acting as a team,†says Survival Strap co-founder Kurt Walchle, who started his Ponte Vedra, Florida-based company with his wife Melissa. Early on, he says he sat his wife down during a difficult period to make sure that she still believed in the vision for the company. No. 4: “Carry notebooks around. There are times when you can’t talk out a decision at the moment, like when training employees. If you jump in, it’s bad and doesn’t present a united front. So we write things down to discuss later,†says Bennett. No. 5: “Work hard to be kind to each other,†says Suzy Boerboom, co-founder of Welcyon with her husband Tom. No. 6: Embrace healthy conflict. “You need healthy conflict for a company to grow,†says Dodson. No. 7: Don’t make disagreements public. “Try not to disagree in front of employees. Sometimes it’s hard when decisions are made on the fly, but it looks like you’re not together in the business,†says Kim Peeples, who started Claremont, California-based VOM FASS with her partner Denise Solis. No. 8: “Be patient with each other and remember that it’s stressful,†says Mike Lohman, who co-owns Los Angeles-based Go Mini’s with his wife Christine Munro. No. 9: Schedule date nights. “We try and have a date night once every two weeks and we get a babysitter,†says Walchle. No. 10: Remember why you started the business. “Money is commonly fought about in any business, but keep in mind that the business is there to make your life overall better. You didn’t go into business to make your lives worse,†says Fred Skeppstrom, who co-owns a Wilmette, Illinois-based TapSnap franchise with his wife Victoria. No. 11: Don’t make disagreements personal. “It comes from our backgrounds in the corporate world. We know how to disagree on professional opinions without dragging personal feelings into it. Don’t ever take it into the home,†says Lenny Feldman, who co-owns Hackensack, New Jersey-based Executive Home Care with his wife Mila. No. 12: Be prepared for the long haul. “Don’t expect to see a reward the very next day,†says Skeppstrom. No. 13: “Try not to overstep the other’s boundaries. He has things he likes doing, and I do things I like doing,†says FlipFlop Dogs co-founder Taffy Miltz, who started the company with her husband Jack. No. 14: “We do not hold a grudge. Never say, ‘I told you so,’†says Miltz. No. 15: “Trust the other person to make sound choices that get you to the same goal,†says Bennett. No. 16: “Take at least one day a week and shut it down. Don’t talk about the business, and focus on the family,†says Lohman. No. 17: Appreciate the shared challenge. “One advantage is that both spouses understand the grind and the work needed to put into the startup,†says Bodrozic. No. 18: Decide who gets the ultimate say-so. [My husband] gets the final say-so, so my mission is to convince him. If you don’t decide, you can go around in circles,†says Bennett. No. 19: Define your values. “We recognize that even though we have different skill sets and strengths, we have the same value system, so we always come back to the core values that match,†says Boerboom. A Growing Trend Working from home is no longer just in the purview of freelancers. They don’t believe in the “stable†career model of working at one company for 30 to 40 years because they witnessed that paradigm vanish. Instead, today’s young professionals want flexibility and purpose, ultimately meshing their personal and professional lives in search of a better way to work. And since technology has made it cheaper and easier to start a business, sometimes entrepreneurship is the way to go. A Bentley University report confers, finding that two-thirds of millennials want to start their own company. “Millennials value mission and purpose over and above stability and a big salary. More than previous generations, millennials want who they are to align very closely with what they do,†said Greg Smith, president at Bloom, a registered investment advisory firm. “They’ll have significantly more and different jobs in their lifetime than previous generations—partly because of this search for purpose.†This all leads to millennials investing in business opportunities, often in the tech field. By Steve Rizzo March 23, 2016 Here’s something to consider. Let’s say your goal is to become a vice president of a big company. After many years of intense stress, worry and an avalanche of emotional, mental and physical overload, you finally achieve your goal, along with all the wealth and prestige that comes with it. Is this success? If you consult a dictionary, the answer would be yes. Webster’s Dictionary defines success like this: 1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. 2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. I think it’s amazing that the words “happy†or “happiness†or “joy†are not included in the definition of the word “success.†Unfortunately, our conventional definition of success is simply achieving the goal. Not enough emphasis is placed on the value of experiencing and enjoying the journey, building character and learning life lessons along the way. Here is a hypothetical question. What if someone were to show you a video of yourself as you climbed the ladder to great success? In this video, you see yourself achieving all of your goals and obtaining wealth. During this entire process, however, you also witness how you subjected your body, mind and spirit to intense negative energy along the way. Not only were you unhappy most of the time, but you were able to see how your outright refusal to allow for joy during the process affected your family, friends, associates and your overall well-being. Talk about a downer of a movie. I’ll ask you the question again. Is this success? Here’s the answer: No! I really want you to get this…. If the process of fulfilling your goal is polluted with negative energy and lack of enjoyment, it can only create more unhappiness, even if the outcome is positive in the short term. The happiness that you feel in the moment of reaching “success†is a temporary state dictated by its conventional definition. After the initial euphoria wears off, you are back in the same old negative place, because you’ve carried that same old negative mindset with you. The truth is, it really doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how famous you are, or how many goals you’ve achieved. It makes no difference how big your house is or what industry accolades you’ve racked up in your career. The entire world can view your life as the ultimate success story, but the bottom line is this: If you are not happy, you are not successful! If you are not enjoying yourself on your journey toward your goal, you’re ripping yourself off. Trust me. There are enough people willing to do that for you. The adventure toward any goal is what brings value to it. The path toward the goal is where your life unfolds and happiness is truly meaningful. When you are in the process of working to achieve something, you are experiencing who you are and what you’re made of. Your character is being tested and molded. When you become aware of the importance of every step in the process, you are sending a message to yourself, as well as the entire universe, that you are not only here, but qualified and ready to overcome obstacles along the way. All of which are essential ingredients for success and happiness. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t make a conscious choice to experience and enjoy yourself on the journey toward the goal. If you do, you will no doubt have a profound appreciation of how you earned it. In my view, that’s the ultimate success. MARCH 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- The Well-Worn Path By Frank Agin There is a place … a wonderful place … a place where most everyone wants to be. It is a place of wonderful natural beauty and worldly riches. It is a place of personal freedom and family security. It is a place where others sing your praises as someone of integrity and wisdom. There are two paths you can follow to get to this wonderful place. The first path starts with a slow trudge, cutting a swath through 25 miles of dense, inhospitable swampy jungle. Then just outside the jungle is a raging river one must carefully traverse, testing leg strength and balance. Finally, once across the rapids, one must ascend a challenging mountainous 5,000-foot climb to the wonderful place. The second path is a well-worn one. This path starts on a well-defined trail that provides for easy passage through the swampy jungle. Then the well-defined trail leads to a sturdy, wooden footbridge that allows one to safely cross the raging river. Once across the bridge, the well-worn path leads you to a series of stairs that allow for a challenge-free ascent up the mountain to the wonderful place. Whether you choose the well-worn path or the challenge-riddled path, however, you end up in the same place. Either path will take you to this wonderful place, where you can enjoy a magnificent life of reasonable freedom, moderate fame, and relative fortune. You just have to choose the path and begin the journey. Like this destination, being in business for yourself is a wonderful place. It offers financial rewards, freedoms, and security, as well as accolades from family, friends, and peers in the local community. Like traveling to the wonderful place, however, there are two paths to business ownership. One path is challenge-riddled. You will need to blaze your own trail … trudging through decision after decision associated with pricing, quality, and strategies to take on well-funded competitors … carefully traverse ordeals related to branding, marketing, and advertising … and the daily issues related to legal matters, employment concerns, and government regulation. Or on the road to business ownership, you could also choose the well-worn path: Purchasing a Franchise. On the well-worn path of franchise ownership, you will still need to take the journey. On this path, however, most of the challenges, issues, and pitfalls along the way have already been worked through. Either way, in the end, you still end up in a wonderful place. The question becomes, however, on the journey to get there how much risk do you want to take and effort do you want to expend? ******************************************************************************************* If There Is A Business That Will Give You What You Want …Is It Worth Looking For by Larry S. Powell Most people will answer "yes" to that question. So, why do so many who say they want to be self-employed and own their own business give up on achieving their dream? There are a number of reasons. One primary one...often business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. They may blame it on the economy, their friends, or other external reasons. Simply stated, they hit a speed bump called “uncertainty and anxiety†and then let their dream slip away. Buying a business is a serious decision. No one makes a major decision without getting a little nervous, or having some anxiety. It happened to me! The process of buying a business can be extremely exhilarating and simultaneously can be a time of high anxiety…this is normal. How do I know? Because I have already made the “quest†and experienced the “anxiety†that is a normal part of the process of buying a business. Prior to buying my home repair / remodeling franchise in 2001, my anxiety and fear had me ready to quit the quest and give up on my dream about 3-4 times. During those times when I was ready to give in to my anxiety, I would see a scripture or quote in the newspaper, magazine, or on a bill board referencing risk…opportunity…achieving your dream, etc. Fortunately each time it would provide me the impetus to continue my quest, move beyond my fear and refocus on my dream. As they say….â€The rest is historyâ€. Even when you get nervous, you can still make a good decision. You have done it many times in your life already. Doing solid, serious research and utilizing good advisors will lead you to a sound decision. Look at all the successful franchisees around your city / town. They made good decisions, and were probably nervous at some point, perhaps at several points during the process. But they didn't let their anxiety rob them of their dreams! If you gather the right information, and are honest about your abilities, you will make a smart, informed decision for yourself...despite the stomach butterflies. Personally, I love “motivational†quotes. I collect them and have about fifteen framed and hanging in my office. Below are a few that I have recently seen and really like: Expect to get nervous. Don’t let anxiety steal your dream. Optimism-The faith that leads to achievement. Take Risks-Don’t be afraid to go on a limb. That’s where the fruit is. Opportunity-You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. What you get from an endeavor will be directly proportional to what you give to the endeavor. No risk = No reward. Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t. Success is not for the timid. It is for those who seek guidance, make decisions, and take decisive action. A year from now, you may wish you had started today. Sometimes in the winds of change we find our true direction. Take Action-You cannot discover new oceans, unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. There is a book written by John Ortberg, If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat. The “boat†is what you hang on to, or whatever represents safety and security to you and that which pulls you away from the high adventure you actually seek. For many, moving towards the dream of being a business owner is simply letting go of the boat we call “corporate Americaâ€. What it really entails is going after what you were made to do, leaving the illusory lifeboat behind and setting sail for uncharted waters. It is always easier and less frightening to keep sitting on the sideline and watching opportunity pass you by, rather than taking careful, but positive steps towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life which is enjoyed by many business owners. So, expect to get nervous. Deal with it. Don't let your nerves prevent you from achieving the lifestyle you deserve. Don't Settle. Get What You Want. If you don't pursue your dream, you will end up working for someone who did! Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Do you dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Maybe you are ready for a change, ready to live life to its fullest or ready to take control of your future. Can you continue to do what you are doing now at the same intensity for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? Perhaps you have the perfect job and perfect life, but do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? There is no security, except what you create for yourself. Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals. Buying a franchise has proven to be a great vehicle for thousands of people to effectively transition into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming a master of their destiny. FEBRUARY 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Emotional Fulfillment – Controlling Your Own Destiny Does A Franchise Meet Your Needs? When you think of becoming a businessperson by making the transition from employee to Franchisee, you don’t generally think in terms of emotional fulfillment. However, in reality, the evaluation of emotional factors should play a significant role in making that final decision to join the world of the capitalist, or remain in the realm of employee. Of course, every analysis should include the standard of comparing risk to return. It should include income projections, and cash flows. It should include the analysis of financing avenues, site selection alternatives, and many other objective criteria to lead to a final decision about becoming an entrepreneur. The course of due diligence should be driven by a systematic approach to each of these items. However, in the end, assuming the objective criteria have been ticked off your list in a satisfactory fashion, it should boil down to emotional fulfillment. After all, we all have a right to be happy. That particular statement – ‘we all have a right to be happy’ – has changed the course of my life on several occasions. It was one of those statements that was passed casually by an acquaintance over dinner one evening, and ignored by everyone at the table, except it hit me right in the heart. It stuck to me like red on a stop sign. As a result, I have made many important life decisions based on emotional criteria, in addition to objective criteria. If it doesn’t pass muster on both fronts then I look for a better course. There are many employment situations that can meet your emotional needs, wants and desires. Of course, there are also many that do not, and cannot. A full examination of emotional criteria should include the analysis of several items, with the ultimate goal of determining whether your needs can be met by a job, or whether it is more likely they can be met by your own business. Control Your Own Destiny The degree of priority that this particular criterion holds for an individual is probably the single most important factor to consider before making the decision to strike out on your own. Just how important is it that you control day-to-day decisions about what you do, and where you do it. How important is it to you to know that you have ultimate control over whether you stay or whether you go at some point. The reality is that it’s not really possible to control your own destiny with a job. Even the most important CEO’s must answer to the Board of Directors. In more traditional circumstances, when and where you travel, when you get promoted, how much you earn, and how long you keep your job are items that are simply not in your control. The boss, and his boss, and her boss, control those things. As we have seen, bosses change, as do Boards, and status quo is sent for a topsy-turvy spin. When, and if, those things happen, are generally not in the control of an employee. As we have seen in recent years, decades really, right-sizing, down-sizing, out-sourcing, and severance packages are the norm of the employment world. The importance of these items, including the degree of control you require over them, should help guide you to your own comfort zone. In addition to a systematic approach to the objective items in making a decision to become an entrepreneur on your own, or to become a Franchisee in a good system, these emotional factors should be ticked off the list as well. Are you satisfied where you are? Can you achieve your goals and dreams in your current situation? Are you more likely to satisfy the need to control your results with your own business? How important is each criteria to you? Did you have to travel over your son’s birthday? Did you have an expense disallowed unfairly? Is the likelihood high or low of the bronze (as opposed to golden) parachute at age 53, with a low chance of a comparable position in the job market? Did you get passed over for a promotion, did you have to work overtime through the Christmas holidays, did you miss your daughter’s volleyball tournament because you couldn’t get off early on Friday? If these things eat at you, perhaps a change in course is due. If you accept that these things go with the territory of employment, then change may not be necessary. Of course, as you progress up the ladder of promotion, you gain some additional autonomy for these types of issues. However, you must also try to determine if that next rung also carries an additional risk of termination at some point. On the other hand, will being in the business you are evaluating help solve the problems that are important to you? Will your business cause the same travel issues? Will the time demands, or strange hours of being a businessperson, be an advantage or disadvantage? Evaluate these items honestly, and with as much empirical evidence as you can gather, along with the other control issues that matter to you. Then determine which situation meets your goals more appropriately. And determine how important that is to you. Then it’s time to move on to the next evaluation criteria. If you always use the ‘I deserve to be happy’ test with each criterion, and try to determine which scenario is most likely to get you closest to that goal, then you will know which column to tick. If you execute this exercise in a systematic fashion along with a systematic evaluation to the objective criteria, it will help to provide clarity for you in the decision-making process. The exercise should then be repeated for a whole host of other emotional factors such as financial independence, day-to-day motivation, building an asset of value, appreciation for efforts, fair remuneration for results generated, free time for family & friends, community respect, recognition of achievements, and several others. The bottom line is you’ve got to look at ROI, cash flow, the system of support, the value of building a brand, the marketplace, and all of the other objective criteria needed to make a proper decision. However, in addition, you also need to examine what you want out of life, and whether a Franchise will help you get there. Have a job you don’t like? By Jack Welch October 26, 2015 Over the past 15 years, I’ve held Q&A sessions with over a million people at more than a thousand events around the world. In all but a handful of these events, people bring up their bosses – and vent about them. This topic comes up without fail, no matter where I am, or what industry or company I’m speaking to. The troubles range from, “My boss is too difficult and demanding†to “My boss doesn’t really care about me, it’s all about her†to “I’ve been busting my butt and my boss just doesn’t recognize my performance -- he feels that everyone is equally wonderful†to “There’s no focus on how much you do, it’s who you know.†I can’t think of a lament I haven’t heard. The basic question is the same… People want to know what they should do in these situations. “I just can’t stand it. Do I quit? Do I ask for a transfer?â€...“Do I go above the boss to his or her boss?†Or “Am I just plain stuck with this guy?†For years, I’ve tried to give advice ranging from, “Stick it out with a set of goals for a defined period of time before you jump†to “Going to the boss’s boss is almost always a fast way to lose†to “Try to open up a good, candid but non-incriminating conversation with your boss . . . Coming in from the side – not head on.†Despite having offered just about every possible answer for relief, more often than not, I haven’t satisfied the unhappy employee. Several months ago, I came up with what I think is the better answer, as far as career development is concerned. I’ve turned the question back on the questioner, by asking a new question that might prove helpful, not only in their current situation but going forward – a question, I hope, will help more people become better bosses in the process: WOULD YOU WANT TO WORK FOR . . . YOU? Yes, it takes a certain threshold of self-awareness to recognize your own flaws, but you should see the look on people’s faces when they stop to honestly think through their own leadership characteristics. The self-confident, self-aware person, upon reflection, seems to really respond to this question. The follow up reception I have received has been incredibly positive, demonstrated by the emails and letters from people in the audiences who found this exercise really useful. Many of them had taken the chance to spend some quiet time reflecting on both their strengths and their flaws -- and, from their notes, appeared open to dealing with their weaknesses in order to become stronger, more effective leaders. Leaders who people want to follow. I was hoping that maybe others would benefit from wrestling with that same introspective question. “WOULD YOU WANT TO WORK FOR . . . OCTOBER 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Are You Ready To Become A Butcher, Baker, or Candle Stick Maker... Do you have the perfect job, wonderful life, everything you want? If so, do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? What would you do if you unexpectedly lost your job? Is your job really that secure or safe? Many employment / career experts believe there is no security, except that which you create for yourself. Or, this scenario…you have a job, but would prefer to have a LIFE. And, are wondering if you can continue to do what you are doing now, at the same intensity that you are doing it, for the next 10, 20, or 30 years. As the 21st century job market continues to constrict, working people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving young people, mid-career types, those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue small business ownership as the career of choice. Creating your own job is the new path job security. As people seek business opportunities, it is important that they pursue options based on the right criteria. Too often, people that are new to the process of exploring business ownership may think they know what they want before they are aware of what is available, as well as the options that align with their goals, lifestyle needs and financial parameters. As children, we may have wanted to pursue a career as a fireman or a pilot. Both of these jobs sound pretty cool, but the interest is based on both a limited knowledge of career options and little or no consideration of other life goals such as where you will live, if you will have a family of your own and what type of skills or training will be required. When searching for a business, we need to carefully define the things that are important to us such as personal / professional interests, lifestyle needs and financial goals while being realistic about our unique competencies. Another important consideration that defines our options is our investment capability. This is typically defined through consideration of our net worth and our available cash or liquidity. A good rule of thumb is that you need about 30% of the total that you will invest in liquid funds and then you can finance the other 70%, provided you have remaining assets to collateralize the loan. I generally recommend that people not put more than half of their net worth at risk. This is a prudent guideline and while sometimes it leaves people with options that don't fit their original vision, it is better to start small than to be over extended when starting a business. Your first business doesn't have to be forever and you can transition into a business that requires more capital later, when you have the resources and experience to do it properly. Finding the right entry point can launch you on a very rewarding career as a business owner and allow you to perform at your best level. The good news is that today there are more business models available to choose from than ever before, so choose wisely and don't be afraid to ask for assistance from a qualified advisor / coach. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals.
