  1. “HORN IN" On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. August 2017 Franchise Opportunity Knocks Self-employment Beckons Start answering the call right here. News you can use to help you find The right franchise / business opportunity for you. Survey Reveals Increasing Optimism among Business Owners and Potential Investors about the Economy WASHINGTON, June 15—Franchise business owners and prospective investors strongly believe the economy is improving and are more likely by a 2-1 margin to invest in a new business today than before the election. This according to a new survey released today by Morning Consult on behalf of the International Franchise Association (IFA). The survey signals that small business owners and investors are more optimistic, however, policymakers should enact regulatory relief and tax reform, to continue to improve the economy for franchise owners and prospective investors. “What we need in this country right now are additional jobs, and the majority of that growth can come from the franchising community, if we avoid impeding owners with burdensome regulations. When local franchise businesses thrive, owners hire and train employees from nearby neighborhoods for positions that range from entry-level to senior management,†said IFA President & CEO Robert Cresanti, CFE. “The results also send a clear message to Congress that the interests of franchise business owners should be front and center for policy makers on both sides of the aisle.†Franchise owners and potential investors are aligned on steps policymakers can take to improve the economy and help achieve their business prospects. According to the survey, a large majority (78 percent) believe reducing red tape on small businesses is the only way to improve the economy. “The survey reaffirms there is a new breed of entrepreneur out there looking for a business they can invest in. The Administration and other key elected officials have suggested a return to three percent growth, and franchising can play critical role in achieving that goal but the industry needs tax reform and more regulatory relief to drive the economy forward,†said Cresanti. ********************************************************* Pet Care is Named One of the Best Industries to Start a Business in 2017 Why it's hot: Forty percent of customers in the pet care industry are ages 30-49. Millennials are aging into this group and getting more pets than previous generations. According to research firm Mintel, three-fourths of American 30-somethings have dogs, compared with half of the overall population. Meanwhile, more than half of Americans in their 30s have cats, compared with 35 percent of the overall population. Millennials with pets also expect to use technology to buy services, providing opportunity for new ventures in e-commerce, subscription packages, and connected devices like pet wearables. Growth: Pet grooming and boarding revenue was nearly $8 billion in the U.S. in 2016, and IBISWorld projects 7 percent annual growth through 2021. According to CB Insights, between 2012 and 2016, $486 million was invested in the global pet tech sector across 172 venture capital deals. The worldwide pet wearables market alone will be a $2.6 billion market by 2019, market research firm IDTechEx predicts. There are several interesting dog / cat / pet services concepts available. The 60 billion dollar pet industry is about to get a makeover in 2017 due to technological advances in the field. In 2016 alone, pet grooming and boarding was worth $8 million with a projected increase of 7 percent annual growth through 2021. With millennials owning more pets than any other generation, low entry barriers, and not a lot of small business competition 2017 is going to be a big year for pet care business owners! ********************************************************* New and Quality Used Sporting Goods and Fitness Equipment Retail Business Are you outgoing and willing to manage and operate a fast paced, fun retail business? Teaches the fundamentals of Baseball, Basketball, Football, Floor Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer and Volleyball. In addition to offering a wide variety of Sports classes, franchisees run several camps and host birthday parties. Started in 1999 in New York City. The two founders saw a need for a more comprehensive instructional Sports program for Younger Children that really focused on fundamentals of team sports, but most importantly a method to teach this in a fun way. Most importantly the combination of making a difference in Children’s lives as we do and the opportunity to be a business owner that comes along with independence and flexibility is exciting. ********************************************************* If you would like additional information about any of the above opportunities, or to discuss in further detail, please call or send me an email with phone number and a good day(s) / time(s) for me to call you. A franchise may not be right for everyone and they are certainly not all created equal, but a good business model can lower the risk factor and accelerate one’s potential for long term success. As always, the key is finding the right match between the franchise model and the owner-operator. 2. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. March 2017 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Do You Think About What Your Work-life and Personal-life Could be Like? If There Is A Business That Will Give You What You Want… ...Is It Worth Looking For? Most people will answer "yes" to that question. So, why do so many who say they want to be self-employed and own their own business give up on achieving their dream? There are a number of reasons. One primary one...often business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. They may blame it on the economy, their friends, or other external reasons. Simply stated, they hit a speed bump called “uncertainty and anxiety†(Fear) and then let their dream slip away. “Fear†= False evidence appearing to be real… Buying a business is a serious decision. No one makes a major decision without getting a little nervous, or having some anxiety. It happened to me! The process of buying a business can be extremely exhilarating and simultaneously can be a time of high anxiety…this is normal. How do I know? Because I have already made the “quest†and experienced the “anxiety†that is a normal part of the process of buying a business. Prior to buying my home repair / remodeling franchise in 2001, my anxiety and fear had me ready to quit the quest and give up on my dream about 3-4 times. During those times when I was ready to give in to my anxiety, I would see an article or quote in the newspaper, magazine, or on a bill board referencing risk…opportunity…achieving your dream, etc. Fortunately each time it would provide me the impetus to continue my quest, move beyond my fear and refocus on my dream. As they say….â€The rest is historyâ€. Even when you get nervous, you can still make a good decision. You have done it many times in your life already. Doing solid, serious research and utilizing good advisors will lead you to a sound decision. Look at all the successful franchisees around your city / town. They made good decisions, and were probably nervous at some point, perhaps at several points during the process. But they didn't let their anxiety rob them of their dreams! If you gather the right information, and are honest about your abilities, you will make a smart, informed decision for yourself...despite the stomach butterflies. Personally, I love “motivational†quotes. I collect them and have about fifteen framed and hanging in my office. Below are a few that I have recently seen and really like: Expect to get nervous. Don’t let anxiety steal your dream. Optimism-The faith that leads to achievement. Take Risks-Don’t be afraid to go on a limb. That’s where the fruit is. Opportunity-You’ll always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. What you get from an endeavor will be directly proportional to what you give to the endeavor. No risk = No reward. Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t. Success is not for the timid. It is for those who seek guidance, make decisions, and take decisive action. A year from now, you may wish you had started today. Sometimes in the winds of change we find our true direction. Take Action-You cannot discover new oceans, unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore. There is a book written by John Ortberg, If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat. The “boat†is what you hang on to, or whatever represents safety and security to you and that which pulls you away from the high adventure you actually seek. For many, moving towards the dream of being a business owner is simply letting go of the boat we call “corporate Americaâ€. What it really entails is going after what you were made to do, leaving the illusory lifeboat behind and setting sail for uncharted waters. It is always easier and less frightening to keep sitting on the sideline and watching opportunity pass you by, rather than taking careful, but positive steps towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life which is enjoyed by many business owners. So, expect to get nervous. Deal with it. Don't let your nerves and fear prevent you from achieving the lifestyle you deserve. When I started the company I was 52 years old. I had diabetes, lost my gall bladder and most of my thyroid gland. But I was convinced that the best was ahead of me. -Ray Kroc, founder of McDonalds- Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? February 2017 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Unchain the Elephant… Reframe Your Thinking to Unleash Your Potential by Erik Wahl The message in Unchain the Elephant is simple… to fully experience all life has to offer, we need to break free from our chains and rediscover our inner creativity and passion. We've all had times in our lives where we felt bound by our past and our fear of failure. We know we should change, but...we can't. Can you relate? I know I can! How would you like to be able to re-frame your thinking to "unthink" your past, eliminate your fear and unleash your potential? Introduction… Unchain the Elephant Several years ago, I had the privilege to go on safari outside Nairobi, Kenya. As I ventured into the vast, unregulated openness of the Masai Mara, I experienced life from a completely new perspective. I witnessed the grace of a pack of gazelles, the migration of the wildebeest, and the clever stealth of the cheetah. But the most memorable encounter by far was when I crested a hill and unexpectedly came face-to-face with the overwhelming size and unparalleled raw power of an untamed elephant. This was not a petting zoo elephant quietly behaving in a crowded room. This enormous elephant was wild and completely unrestrained to explore, to discover, and to enjoy the beauty of its natural habitat. How did this massive, powerful, free creature succumb to a life tethered to a chain in a circus tent? When an elephant is born into captivity, the owner ties the animal to a tree or post with a thick chain to prevent the 250-pound infant from escaping. During the first few weeks of his life, the small elephant tests the chain that binds him, again and again, in an attempt to free himself and wander as his nature urges him to do. His efforts, however, are no match for steel links. Over the course of a few weeks, he eventually learns that his resources are no match for the hardiness of the chain. He gives up any further attempts to free himself, and thus relegates himself to a life within a small circle. As an adult elephant conditioned by a past experience, he can now be tethered to a small tree with the thinnest of ropes or, in some cases, no rope at all. He makes no attempts to wander because he carries with him, for life, the belief that he does not possess the power to break the ties that bind him. The adult elephant could easily snap the rope or uproot the tree to which it is attached, but he makes no such effort, because early in life, he was taught that true freedom was not available to him. For the remainder of his life, he is tame and nothing like the captivating, powerful creature he was born to be. Can you sympathize with this elephant? Do you feel your life has been shackled by what you were conditioned to believe when you were young? Maybe the conditioning was even more recent than that. The time has come to unchain the elephant. Perhaps It Is Time For A Career Change...And An Opportunity To Invest In Yourself. As the 21st century job market continues to constrict, working people are retooling their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving young people, mid-career types, those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue self-employment options. Over the past several years, many individuals have found it increasingly difficult to secure other employment. Particularly, those who may be more “matureâ€, or have been at a high income level. Therefore, a number of these folks have decided to pursue small business ownership as the “new†career of choice. Today, creating your own job has become the new path to job security. With all the layoffs that 2008-2009 brought it makes one question job security. Many of the folks who lost their jobs during the Great Recession are either still unemployed, or under-employed today. The Federal government and a number of leading economists have reported that most of the jobs that were “cut†are not likely to return. The job market today exhibits three (3) frustrating and consistent themes… High paying jobs are increasingly hard to find. The average job lasts 18-24 months…so, how much security is being provided by employment. Executives are being asked to do substantially more with fewer resources. Therefore, you may be: "Burned-out" from corporate America. Eager to infuse some excitement back into your work-life, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life. Mentally stuck between the known reality of the unpleasant life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership... Tethered by the chain called corporate America. Do you want to break free of the shackle of corporate employment? If so, call me… This is what I do… My role is to challenge your thinking which may enable you to chart a new path to greater freedom, independence and personal fulfillment. So, if you are ready to leave your comfort zone and explore business ownership options, let’s talk. New Year's Edition January 2017 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Best Wishes For A Healthy And Prosperous 2017 Failure Is Not The Outcome. Failure Is Not Trying Sara Blakely, Founder of Spanx Shapewear... As a young girl, Sara Blakely’s father would ask: “What did you fail at today?†Growing up failure was viewed as a good thing. If Sara didn’t fail at something that day, her father would be duly disappointed. This enthusiasm towards trying new things, regardless of the outcome, helped Blakely avoid the paralyzing fear of failure that prevents many people from reaching beyond their comfort zones. In her 20s, and frustrated by the lack of undergarments to wear with white pants, Sara Blakely’s idea for Spanx was born when she cut the feet off of a pair of pantyhose. In 2012, she was the youngest self-made woman to join Forbes’ billionaire list. According to Blakely, the only real failure is to not try at all. Ray Kroc, Founder of McDonalds... When I started the Company I was 52 years old. I had diabetes, lost my gall bladder and most of my thyroid gland. But, I was convinced that the best was ahead of me. Recently, I read a research report indicating that over 75% of the population is NOT engaged in their work. When told this finding and statistic, many people will just nod knowingly and think…â€Yeah...that sounds about right!†If you are one of the 75%, do you ever wonder…â€whyâ€? Why is it that so many of us end up settling for less of a personal and professional lifestyle than we deserve? Let’s take a moment and break this down… Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Did you know the average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime? Wow, that’s a long time to be unhappy. What do most of us do each morning after we wake up? Well, for many of us we go on autopilot through a set of highly routine, automatic behaviors. For example, you always wake up on the same side of the bed, go to the sink and look in the mirror, shower, and go through your automatic routine without even thinking. Next, you get in your truck / car and zone out as you commute to work without even thinking about it. At work, you do the same routines that you have memorized so well. You see the same people, who push your same emotional buttons, which causes you to have the same reactions and thoughts about those people and your work and life. Then when the day is done, you hurry home for dinner so you can rush to cook, eat, and watch TV, then you scurry to bed and do it all over again. Unfortunately, many folks are so miserable with their work-life they go home and argue with their spouse, ignore the kids, kick the dog(s) / cat(s) and / or turn to illicit “pleasuresâ€. And, they continue to be personally and professionally unhappy and unfulfilled. If the above scenario applies to you…can you continue to do what you are doing now at the same intensity for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? Do you want to infuse some excitement back into your work-life? Are you interested in seeking a renewed purpose for getting up every morning? If you are honest with yourself… How could you expect a different career outcome when you think the same thought patterns, perform the same behaviors, and experience the same emotions all day…every day? Are you in a “rut†and want to climb out… At one time or another, most of us have fallen victim to this type of a limited life…myself included. Kiss Your Boss Goodbye. I Did…MY STORY…I Am A Refugee Of Corporate America…You Can Be Too If your environment remains the same and you continue to react by thinking in the same way, and make the same decisions you will create more of the same. According to Tony Robbins, “If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten. If you don’t like what you are getting, you must change what you are doingâ€. This is why change is hard and often scary. You have to change the way you make decisions and react to your environment to achieve your goals and dreams. The bottom line is you need to take action to create the life you want. A window of opportunity won’t open itself… Do you dream about being self-employed…owning your own business? Will you attain your dream, or will your dream always remain exactly that – a dream? 5. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. Holiday Edition December 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Season’s Greetings… Wishing you and your family a safe and wonderful… Ø Christmas, Ø Hanukkah Holiday Edition December 2016 The New Year…2017, is fast approaching. I’m sure many of you are contemplating your professional future, as well as what you want to do when you “grow upâ€. Perhaps you are facing the perplexing dilemma: Do I stay with the “Ugly Girl / Steady Eddie†(Employment) because I’m afraid to pursue the “Beautiful Girl / Stud Jock†(Business Ownership)... Note: Please do not interpret the above statement as any type of sexist statement. It is only intended to be an illustrative play-on-words. Perhaps you have the perfect job and perfect life, but do you have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Maybe you are ready for a change, ready to live life to its fullest or ready to take control of your future. If you are presently employed…can you continue to do what you are doing now at the same intensity for the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Do you really want to? You may want to infuse some excitement back into your work-life. Or, does your life in corporate America seem like you are standing on the edge staring down into the abyss? Today, many people would answer “Yes†to that question. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Dislike your corporate job, but don’t know how to find your real niche in life? Presently have a demanding JOB, but prefer to have a LIFE? Desire is to own your business…with more flexibility, financial success and independence? Fed up with your job…ready to be your own boss? “Burned-out†from corporate America? Prepared to take “real†control of the future for you and your family? Eager to infuse excitement back into your work-life? Content with your present job, but don’t have a back-up plan if the unthinkable happens? Ready to change the future by controlling your destiny, rather than having it dictated by someone else? Today, many people dread going to work. It is estimated that as many as 80% of the working population is dissatisfied with their jobs. For these folks, going to work is a chore. Did you know the average person will spend over 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime? Wow, that’s a long time to be unhappy. Blake Mallen, a very successful entrepreneur, once told me, “The moment you stop doing what you think you are supposed to do, and start doing what you were meant to do, is when the script ends and life beginsâ€. Is it time for you to break from the script and go after a life that offers you greater flexibility, freedom and independence? Studies show that the majority of Americans say they would like to own their own business. But, only a few will ever realize this dream. Perhaps that can be best explained by a quote from Brian Tracey. Mr. Tracey has said, “A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the first stepâ€. Please allow me to describe a common scenario…You are ready for a career change-you get the urge to tell your boss what she / he can do with the latest company policy. The reality of corporate life is becoming more painful …job security is an illusion…your work-life and income is being dictated by someone else…your employer isn’t investing in your future. Now, your brain is on a mental trampoline and you exclaim, “Well, why don’t I invest in myself?†Then, your mind begins to race back and forth between the known reality of the uncertain and often unpleasant life in corporate America, and the unknown aspects of how you can get independence through business ownership. If you are one of the 80% don't let the "FUD (Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt) Factor" stop you. Tony Robbins: Fear can create unnecessary stress in the mind—and how to get out of your head when it happens. What a lot of people call suffering is really just an overload of stress, Robbins says. When billionaires call him seeking business advice, he digs deeper to uncover the root of their problems. They might be looking for growth or more impressive sales results—but after he acknowledges what they want, he aims to give them what they need. “If I follow the trail of your stress, it will take me to your deepest fears,†he says. “And I always believe that life is the dance between what you desire most and what you fear most.†Somewhere in that equation lies the real need, the one thing everyone wants the most—a meaningful life. You won’t achieve that by living in a way that favors suffering, such as overstressing about money, Robbins says. Since the brain was designed for survival rather than happiness, it’s up to the human to decide its fate—to create happiness in a space that historically functioned on a “fight or flight†level. “It’s learning how to train yourself with a new set of habits to look at it, to be entertained by the mind and know that you’re more than your mind,†Robbins says. Tony Robbins: Life is a Dance Between Your Fears and Desires Do you have a dream to be self-employed…to own you own business? Does this dream inspire you, energize you, and stir your inner drive to do everything you can to achieve it? Perhaps the most important question is, “How will you achieve your dreamâ€? The answer to this question is imperative because “it is the reason†most people never realize their dream. Too often franchise business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. These people who really want to own a business don’t ever get to enjoy this wonderful experience because they allow the "FUD Factor" to grow, fester and steal their dream. They have no guidance or strategy in place, no knowledge of what is needed and must sometimes be sacrificed to have the dream come true. Most people have no idea how to achieve their dream of becoming a business owner. They don’t know what type of business is right for them, where or how to start the process. So, most people simply get overwhelmed with fear, uncertainty and doubt. And, when people are unsure as to what, how, and when, they STOP. A window of opportunity won’t open itself… So, would this scenario be of interest and value to you…a process where you receive assistance to help you better identify your goals, financial requirements, lifestyle needs and what you would like for your work-life to look like; then provided information on self-employment options and guidance on exploring these opportunities within the confines of a safe and no-obligation environment? Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals and for some, it may be their only viable option in our current economy. And, buying a franchise provides the opportunity to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. A franchise already has a proven concept and an effective business model with a stable track record. Therefore, you gain access to a successful business concept without having to “reinvent the wheel.†Franchises are everywhere today. Financial experts believe franchising is the “wave of the future.†Within 10 years, franchises could comprise over 50% of the retail and service sectors. This expectation is based on the underlying concept-Franchises offer aspiring business owners the greatest success potential, with the least amount of risk. Franchises present countless opportunities for successful ownership and financial independence. In U.S. and world economies, franchising is creating greater avenues for wealth accumulation among both franchisees and franchisors. As existing franchise systems become more successful, new franchises will be developed and introduced to the market. In today’s market, thousands of franchise opportunities are available - just about everything from advertising to maid services to weight control. The franchisor knows the business, so industry experience is not required. Franchisors seek franchisees possessing customer service, business and management skills. Franchises have proven to be an effective vehicle for successfully transitioning into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming the master of your own destiny. ***************************************************************************************************************** Are you in career transition, or contemplating making a change? 6. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. I Hope You and Your Family Enjoy a Safe and Wonderful Thanksgiving! NOVEMBER 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- From the NFL Locker Room to the Boardroom By Tom Scarda There is a long list of professional athletes who have purchased a franchise business. However, there is only one who actually started a franchise from scratch. That isTafa Jefferson, former offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears. During my recent conversation with the former NFL player he asked me, “Tom, do you know what NFL stands for?†Naturally, to show how smart I am, I shot back, “National Football League.†He said, “Nope, NFL stands for Not For Long!†Many NFL careers are ended early due to injury, and Jefferson’s career was no different. It ended when he suffered unsustainable ankle damage, and he was relieved of his position even sooner than he expected. But his preparation in school allowed him to not miss a beat. In college, Jefferson understood football was just a means to an end. The young athlete recognized that being a professional football player is short lived, regardless of your age. It’s just too hard on the body to play for 20 years. He knew that someday he would need a plan B. So, while in school, he learned all he could about business and entrepreneurship. Jefferson had a passion for entrepreneurship because of his father’s influence. Jefferson Sr. was an entrepreneur and didn’t rely on anyone to make a living -- he made his own living. That’s where the younger Jefferson learned “hustle.†Another business inspiration for Jefferson was his mom. She was a caregiver, and he saw the satisfaction she got from providing that service to people in need. With a business degree and the life experiences he had growing up with his parents, Jefferson started an in-home healthcare business within months of leaving the NFL. Jefferson’s company, Amada Senior Care, is a national franchise that provides in-home care to seniors to help them age at home. He said he is grooming his franchise partners to be the “navy seals†of senior care. He is looking for talented, hard-working men and woman who are not afraid of doing great work. One of the tenants of Amada Care is to be confidently humble. “Business is a contact sport, much like football,†Jefferson said. “You must be confidant, show up to do your best every day, or otherwise, the competitor will eat you alive.†He added that humility is a key core value of his company. Jefferson says he and his franchise owners are honored and grateful to be able to give this type of care to individuals and families of folks who need the help at home. And, living a life in service of others helps his employees do well in their own lives. His father always told him “You must treat your business like a farm. You can’t be afraid of rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty. A farmer has to prep the land and get rid of tree stumps and rocks. It’s hard work to get started. but it must be done. Without preparation, nothing will grow, including a new business. Once the ground is ready, then plant the seeds. Keep nurturing the farm every day and tend to the crops. Don’t miss a day. Just like in business, it’s all about consistency. Before you can harvest the fruits and vegetables, you must be patient, very patient.†Jefferson continued: “People these days are too much in a hurry to get results. Anything that has any value comes with time and patience -- especially in business. The key to success in business or sports is to be prepared and then practice, practice, and then practice some more. When your number is called, you must be ready to stand up and play your position to the best of your ability.†To be the best at something takes some sacrifice. Famed basketball coach Bobby Knight said, “Most people have the will to win, few have the will to prepare to win.†Jefferson said his favorite quote is from the late Muhammad Ali, who said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.†Jefferson’s football training was not wasted. He believes that owning a business requires some of the same attributes as playing pro football. The 10-year franchise veteran says that the five lessons taken from football and applied in business are: 1. Be Coachable. Be someone who likes to engage people and have a sales talent, perhaps. Jefferson loves people who have failed at something. Those people are now coachable. A great franchisee or business owner, for that matter, must be open to being coached. 2. Heart. Business owners, like professional football players, need to have heart. In any business, the owner needs to have empathy for the customer. How else can you anticipate their needs? 3. Tenacity. Tenacity is the willingness to hustle and get it done. You must be a peak performer and in top shape to be a winner in your game with the stamina to finish strong. 4. Teamwork. People who are teammates will push each other to do well. People who are committed to the good fight of building a brand will always help each other when the going gets rough -- someone who is willing to “stay in the pocket†when the rush is on. 5. Strategy. Strategy is paramount. Your competitors can’t know what your plays are. Your plays are the only differentiator for your business. They are the secret sauce of your company. The most important piece of advice Jefferson offers to people who are starting a business or buying into a franchise is to look for something that will be sustainable. “Look at our business," Jefferson said. "I picked serving baby boomers because I knew there would be a silver tsunami, and I want to be well-positioned when it comes ashore.†He added, “If it’s all about money for you, then your business will suffer. You have to put passion first. You need to work like heck to fulfill your passion and the money will follow.†NOTE: There is a long list of professional athletes who have purchased a franchise business. However, there is only one who actually started a franchise from scratch. That isTafa Jefferson, former offensive lineman for the Chicago Bears. UT's Cory Redding may be the second former NFL player to start a franchise. Redding’s Barbershop is in the final stages of franchise development and franchise options should be available soon for aspiring entrepreneurs. ************************************************************************************************************ “ The Are No Traffic Jams Along The Extra Mile †~Roger Staubach ***************************************************************************************************************** Are you in career transition, or contemplating making a change? 7. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. OCTOBER 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Perhaps It Is Time For A Career Change ...And An Opportunity To Invest In Yourself. As the 21st century "professional" job market continues to constrict, corporate America "refugees and "wannabe refugees" are refocusing their vision of how they will make a living in the years to come. This is driving many of those who are transitioning out of corporate America jobs, as well as millennials, retirees, and stay-at-home mothers who would like to go back to work, to pursue self-employment options. With all the layoffs that have occurred since 2008, it makes one question job security. If you are employed in the oil industry, job security or lack thereof, may be a daily worry. The Federal government and a number of leading economists have reported that most of the jobs that have been “cut†are not likely to return. The job market today exhibits three (3) frustrating and consistent themes… High paying jobs are increasingly hard to find. The average job lasts 18-24 months…so, how much security is being provided by employment. Executives are being asked to do substantially more with fewer resources. Owning your own business may provide the opportunity for you to reach your goals and for some, it may be their only viable option in our current economy. And, buying a franchise provides the opportunity to be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. A franchise already has a proven concept and an effective business model with a stable track record. Therefore, you gain access to a successful business concept without having to “reinvent the wheel.†Franchise ownership has proven to be a great vehicle for thousands of people to effectively transition into a new industry and self-employment with an improved quality of life, while becoming master of their destiny. Are you going to sit on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners? To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. Would this scenario be of interest and value to you…a process where you receive assistance to help you better identify your goals, financial requirements, lifestyle needs and what you would like for your work-life to look like; then provided information on self-employment options and guidance on exploring these opportunities within the confines of a supportive, educational and no-obligation environment? Have a job you don’t like? Seek other employment…I call that “Changing Your Curtainsâ€. Perhaps, you prefer a bolder approach which may provide a new and invigorating work-life…I refer to that as “Changing Your Viewâ€. In 2001, I decided to “Change My Viewâ€. If you are ready…Let’s Talk. I can help you “Change Your View†too… ************************************************************************************************************ Business Owner or Employee? Franchising Offers the Best of Both Worlds by Robert Addie Many, if not most, people dream of owning their own business. It sounds fun and exciting, and it truly can be. However, there are different types of business ownership that come with different perks and pitfalls. Startups, for example, involve huge commitments: finances, time, and energy. Frankly, startups depend on luck more than any other business model. It is high-risk, high-reward, but if the business fails, the losses can be devastating. This is why so many employees wishing to break away from the daily grind of a job tend to shy away from venturing out on their own to be their own boss. With no disrespect to startups that made it—Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, etc.—much of the success of these big names involved a large amount of good fortune. Of course, there were genius entrepreneurs behind them, and whatever they did, it worked, but not everyone has the resources, nor are they willing to risk it all on a new business or new idea. In most cases, that is a wise decision. Unfortunately, many people wishing to be their own boss are afraid to become business owners because they immediately equate business ownership with the startup. This perception is analogous to avoiding the ocean because you are afraid of Jaws. If you’re interested in becoming a business owner but can’t fathom starting from scratch, franchising is an excellent solution. In fact, Brad Sugars, owner of the world’s No. 1 business coaching firm in the world, strongly recommends franchising as a first, or even second or third business for the new entrepreneur. Why franchising? “It offers the right mix of independence and proven strategy,†Sugars said, “It has the strength of a tried-and-true business model with the freedom that comes from working for yourself and managing your individual franchise, within certain parameters, as you see fit.†Furthermore, there are thousands of franchise opportunities available, franchising is becoming more popular than ever, and the investment can be relatively small, depending on what type of franchise you choose. Most importantly, of all significant business models, the franchise is the least likely to fail because it is strongly backed by the franchisor, who offers support and has a vested interest in the success of each individual franchise. Furthermore, franchising, as a general business model is expected to grow steadily by at least 1.5% in 2016 and on. “ Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man who goes the furthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The "sure thing" boat never gets far from shore. †~Carnegie, Dale on Risk **************************************************************************************************************** Are you in career transition, or contemplating making a change? For many, the one thing holding them back from pursuing their dream of small business ownership is the fear they don’t have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. Having helped over 11,000 people open small businesses, Guidant can attest to the fact that individuals of all backgrounds and personalities can and do make great entrepreneurs. What does it take to be an entrepreneur? You may be asking yourself this question if you’re considering opening your own business. Fortunately, diversity is key on Main Street and there isn’t one specific personality type or set of skills that make an entrepreneur great. If you’re hoping to find out if small business ownership is right for you, Guidant CEO, David Nilssen, explains how anyone can be an entrepreneur and shares the three common characteristics that help small business owners succeed. David Nilssen: As I travel the country talking to people about small business ownership, one of the most common questions I’m asked is, “How do I know if I’m an entrepreneur?†I think that’s a question that many people ask themselves over their lifetime, but very few people take the action necessary to understand whether it’s true or not. My personal belief is that anyone can be an entrepreneur. There have been a lot of articles and videos that have been created over time that define the common characteristics of an entrepreneur. The reality is, most of the entrepreneurs that I know are very, very different, but I would say that there are three common characteristics that have helped them be successful over time. The first is a thirst for learning. An intellectual curiosity as the business throws its challenges, and as obstacles appear, the ability to overcome them by seeking knowledge. The second is resilience. One of my favorite quotes from Mike Tyson is “everyone has got a plan until they get punched in the face.†And it’s true about business too. We create these business plans and we put them into work — the question is what do we do when we find out that once we wrote the business plan it was wrong. Do we get back up and fight the good fight? Do we recover quickly? It’s all about resilience. And then the last is simply, discipline. The greatest football teams in the world don’t win constantly because of one great play. They win because they are willing to do the blocking and tackling necessary, and attacking each game with fervor to win the ball game ultimately. The same thing is true for an entrepreneur. While we get distracted by the shiny new toy, the most important thing that we can do is to focus on those things that are important and not urgent. The last I would just say, fear in general is something that every entrepreneur feels, and it’s not something we should worry about if it’s there. That fear of mediocrity, that fear of failing, that’s a powerful motivator for a small business, and quite frankly if you embrace it, it could be what makes you great. ************************************************************************************************ Fears that Drown Dreams… It’s Not The Right Time While there are certainly legitimate reasons why a person may not become a business owner, I will highlight a few of the primary reasons cited by people who say they would like to own a business, but haven’t made the leap. I will also offer some thoughts on how to overcome the fear and progress towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners. It’s Not the Right Time…â€As soon as the mortgage is paid; as soon as the kids are through college; as soon as I get my buyout at work; as soon as I learn everything there is to know about it; as soon as 2 + 2+ 2 = 4. As soon as I am absolutely sure that this venture will have zero risk and my success is guaranteed.†These thoughts are absolutely paralyzing and debilitating. They are very real thoughts, and most are legitimate thoughts. But none-the-less, they are only thoughts and not reality, and do impede forward progress. I would like to share a quote from Goethe that seems to strike at the very heart of this issue: “There is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless splendid plans-that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and magic in it. Begin it now.†Nike has made the slogan, “Just Do It†famous. That attitude doesn’t suit everyone, but perhaps it should. I believe it DOES characterize those successful people we aspire to be like. The point is that the time to act is very likely now, when the opportunity is present, as opposed to some ill-defined “when…then I will…†Stated another way by Marsha Sinetar, “Intentions count as nothing if we do not translate them into action.†Are you going to sit on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards the dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners? To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. Real-life couples share their tips for juggling love and business. No. 1: “Figure out who has strengths to do which task. It’s like running a household – one person may be great at yard work and the other person may be great at cooking. You have to figure that out in the business as well,†says Arianne Bennett, who co-owns Washington, D.C.-based Amsterdam Falafelshop with her husband Scott. No. 2: “Understand each other’s work styles and take that into consideration for how to meet in the middle and compromise,†says Homezada co-founder Beth Dodson, who runs the San Francisco-based company with her husband John Bodrozic. No. 3: “Make sure you’re on the same page and acting as a team,†says Survival Strap co-founder Kurt Walchle, who started his Ponte Vedra, Florida-based company with his wife Melissa. Early on, he says he sat his wife down during a difficult period to make sure that she still believed in the vision for the company. No. 4: “Carry notebooks around. There are times when you can’t talk out a decision at the moment, like when training employees. If you jump in, it’s bad and doesn’t present a united front. So we write things down to discuss later,†says Bennett. No. 5: “Work hard to be kind to each other,†says Suzy Boerboom, co-founder of Welcyon with her husband Tom. No. 6: Embrace healthy conflict. “You need healthy conflict for a company to grow,†says Dodson. No. 7: Don’t make disagreements public. “Try not to disagree in front of employees. Sometimes it’s hard when decisions are made on the fly, but it looks like you’re not together in the business,†says Kim Peeples, who started Claremont, California-based VOM FASS with her partner Denise Solis. No. 8: “Be patient with each other and remember that it’s stressful,†says Mike Lohman, who co-owns Los Angeles-based Go Mini’s with his wife Christine Munro. No. 9: Schedule date nights. “We try and have a date night once every two weeks and we get a babysitter,†says Walchle. No. 10: Remember why you started the business. “Money is commonly fought about in any business, but keep in mind that the business is there to make your life overall better. You didn’t go into business to make your lives worse,†says Fred Skeppstrom, who co-owns a Wilmette, Illinois-based TapSnap franchise with his wife Victoria. No. 11: Don’t make disagreements personal. “It comes from our backgrounds in the corporate world. We know how to disagree on professional opinions without dragging personal feelings into it. Don’t ever take it into the home,†says Lenny Feldman, who co-owns Hackensack, New Jersey-based Executive Home Care with his wife Mila. No. 12: Be prepared for the long haul. “Don’t expect to see a reward the very next day,†says Skeppstrom. No. 13: “Try not to overstep the other’s boundaries. He has things he likes doing, and I do things I like doing,†says FlipFlop Dogs co-founder Taffy Miltz, who started the company with her husband Jack. No. 14: “We do not hold a grudge. Never say, ‘I told you so,’†says Miltz. No. 15: “Trust the other person to make sound choices that get you to the same goal,†says Bennett. No. 16: “Take at least one day a week and shut it down. Don’t talk about the business, and focus on the family,†says Lohman. No. 17: Appreciate the shared challenge. “One advantage is that both spouses understand the grind and the work needed to put into the startup,†says Bodrozic. No. 18: Decide who gets the ultimate say-so. [My husband] gets the final say-so, so my mission is to convince him. If you don’t decide, you can go around in circles,†says Bennett. No. 19: Define your values. “We recognize that even though we have different skill sets and strengths, we have the same value system, so we always come back to the core values that match,†says Boerboom. No. 20: Take vacation. “We try and take one time a year where she and I get away from the kids and the business and we have one rule: Don’t mention [the business],†says Walchle. ************************************************************* Home-based Franchises... A Growing Trend Working from home is no longer just in the purview of freelancers. Some franchises are expanding through the use of a home-based franchise model, which offers a lower cost for initial investment, while still providing access to franchisee training programs, and operational, marketing and technology support. ************************************************************** Excerpt from Millennials Investing Where Boomers Won’t By Dwain Phelps Millennials want to own a business. They don’t believe in the “stable†career model of working at one company for 30 to 40 years because they witnessed that paradigm vanish. Instead, today’s young professionals want flexibility and purpose, ultimately meshing their personal and professional lives in search of a better way to work. And since technology has made it cheaper and easier to start a business, sometimes entrepreneurship is the way to go. A Bentley University report confers, finding that two-thirds of millennials want to start their own company. “Millennials value mission and purpose over and above stability and a big salary. More than previous generations, millennials want who they are to align very closely with what they do,†said Greg Smith, president at Bloom, a registered investment advisory firm. “They’ll have significantly more and different jobs in their lifetime than previous generations—partly because of this search for purpose.†This all leads to millennials investing in business opportunities, often in the tech field. As recent studies note, they’re embracing entrepreneurship and optimistic about their prospects. *************************************************************** About another 30-45 days for the legal and operational components of franchising Redd’s Barbershop to be completed. However, starting a business from the ground up can be a daunting task. Young entrepreneurs in particular may face barriers including limited finances and business management experience, as well as the absence of support needed to succeed as an independent business owner. Enter franchising. Franchising offers a unique opportunity for Millennials who may not have prior business experience to succeed thanks to a business structure that is already in place. The franchise networks combine brand strength and a proven business model that offers, resources and continued support for franchise owners along the way. Many of these entrepreneurs are motivated and eager to take advantage of the resources provided by the franchisor and there are several common practices that have helped them achieve success, including: Taking advantage of training and resources By joining a franchise, business owners capitalize on the industry knowledge, training, sales and marketing expertise, and longstanding reputation of an established company. The franchisor provides franchisees with comprehensive training programs and tools to develop the business acumen and day-to-day operational skills needed to own and operate a franchise. Setting goals In business, it’s important to set attainable goals and then develop a clear plan to achieve those goals. Whether it’s increasing sales, encouraging brand loyalty or promoting a specific product, goal setting establishes a clear path to success. Hiring the right employees Employees are the first touch point for customers and a critical part of achieving success in business. However, finding and retaining good employees can be challenging. It’s important to create a positive work environment and keep them motivated so they remain engaged. Making connections within the franchise network Unlike many other independently owned businesses, franchising allows you to join a network of other owners. Networking with these other franchisees offers a great opportunity to make new connections and develop relationships that advance your business and your career. It can also provide great insight into what it takes to operate a successful franchise. For Millennials and other young entrepreneurs, owning a business is an exciting yet challenging aspiration. Through franchising, this dream can not only become a reality, it can lead to a successful career. ***************************************************** "Everything Big Starts with Something Little" Excerpt from An Enemy Called Average by John Mason All successful people are faithful in the small things. There is power in taking small steps. Many people are not moving forward today simply because they were not willing to take the small step placed before them. If you have a dream to go into any particular area, you should leap at the opportunity—no matter how small—to move in the direction of your dream. For example: if you dream of being a college basketball coach and are sitting at home waiting for an invitation from Roy Williams at North Carolina University, you should know that call will never come. You need to find an opportunity to coach somewhere, anywhere. Find a young person, a young team. Jump in and coach with all of your heart, like you would if you were coaching at the highest level. Don’t be afraid to take small steps. There’s something powerful about momentum…no matter how small. Many times the impossible is simply the untried. I can remember a time in my life when I was immobilized with fear, consumed with what I was supposed to do. It seemed so huge a task; I was unable to bring myself to face it. A friend came to me and spoke two words that broke that paralysis in my life. He said, “Do something!†I’ll never forget that day…taking some small, seemingly insignificant steps. Momentum began to come into my life. If you are at a point of paralysis in your life because of what you feel you’re supposed to do, the words today are, “Do something!†Don’t worry about the long-term goal right now; just take the steps that take you past the starting point. Soon you’ll get to a point of no return. As you climb higher, you’ll be able to see much farther. As you begin, don’t be afraid. Eric Hoffer said, “Fear of becoming a ‘has-been’ keeps some people from becoming anything.†Every great idea is impossible from where you are starting today. But little goals add up, and they add up rapidly. Most people don’t succeed because they are too afraid to even try. As incredible as it sounds, they decide in advance they’re going to fail. Many times the final goal seems so unreachable we don’t even make an effort. But once you’ve made your decision and have started, it’s like you’re halfway there. Start—no matter what your circumstances. Take that first step! ***************************************************** If you aren’t happy with your job; career; or professional direction, perhaps you aren’t doing what you were meant to do. By Steve Rizzo March 23, 2016 Here’s something to consider. Let’s say your goal is to become a vice president of a big company. After many years of intense stress, worry and an avalanche of emotional, mental and physical overload, you finally achieve your goal, along with all the wealth and prestige that comes with it. Is this success? If you consult a dictionary, the answer would be yes. Webster’s Dictionary defines success like this: 1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. 2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. I think it’s amazing that the words “happy†or “happiness†or “joy†are not included in the definition of the word “success.†Unfortunately, our conventional definition of success is simply achieving the goal. Not enough emphasis is placed on the value of experiencing and enjoying the journey, building character and learning life lessons along the way. Here is a hypothetical question. What if someone were to show you a video of yourself as you climbed the ladder to great success? In this video, you see yourself achieving all of your goals and obtaining wealth. During this entire process, however, you also witness how you subjected your body, mind and spirit to intense negative energy along the way. Not only were you unhappy most of the time, but you were able to see how your outright refusal to allow for joy during the process affected your family, friends, associates and your overall well-being. Talk about a downer of a movie. I’ll ask you the question again. Is this success? Here’s the answer: No! I really want you to get this…. If the process of fulfilling your goal is polluted with negative energy and lack of enjoyment, it can only create more unhappiness, even if the outcome is positive in the short term. The happiness that you feel in the moment of reaching “success†is a temporary state dictated by its conventional definition. After the initial euphoria wears off, you are back in the same old negative place, because you’ve carried that same old negative mindset with you. The truth is, it really doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how famous you are, or how many goals you’ve achieved. It makes no difference how big your house is or what industry accolades you’ve racked up in your career. The entire world can view your life as the ultimate success story, but the bottom line is this: If you are not happy, you are not successful! If you are not enjoying yourself on your journey toward your goal, you’re ripping yourself off. Trust me. There are enough people willing to do that for you. The adventure toward any goal is what brings value to it. The path toward the goal is where your life unfolds and happiness is truly meaningful. When you are in the process of working to achieve something, you are experiencing who you are and what you’re made of. Your character is being tested and molded. When you become aware of the importance of every step in the process, you are sending a message to yourself, as well as the entire universe, that you are not only here, but qualified and ready to overcome obstacles along the way. All of which are essential ingredients for success and happiness. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t make a conscious choice to experience and enjoy yourself on the journey toward the goal. If you do, you will no doubt have a profound appreciation of how you earned it. In my view, that’s the ultimate success. If you make this “common-sense success strategy†a habit, it will transform your life. ***************************************************** If you aren’t happy with your job; career; or professional direction, perhaps you aren’t doing what you were meant to do. MARCH 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- The Well-Worn Path By Frank Agin There is a place … a wonderful place … a place where most everyone wants to be. It is a place of wonderful natural beauty and worldly riches. It is a place of personal freedom and family security. It is a place where others sing your praises as someone of integrity and wisdom. There are two paths you can follow to get to this wonderful place. The first path starts with a slow trudge, cutting a swath through 25 miles of dense, inhospitable swampy jungle. Then just outside the jungle is a raging river one must carefully traverse, testing leg strength and balance. Finally, once across the rapids, one must ascend a challenging mountainous 5,000-foot climb to the wonderful place. The second path is a well-worn one. This path starts on a well-defined trail that provides for easy passage through the swampy jungle. Then the well-defined trail leads to a sturdy, wooden footbridge that allows one to safely cross the raging river. Once across the bridge, the well-worn path leads you to a series of stairs that allow for a challenge-free ascent up the mountain to the wonderful place. Whether you choose the well-worn path or the challenge-riddled path, however, you end up in the same place. Either path will take you to this wonderful place, where you can enjoy a magnificent life of reasonable freedom, moderate fame, and relative fortune. You just have to choose the path and begin the journey. Like this destination, being in business for yourself is a wonderful place. It offers financial rewards, freedoms, and security, as well as accolades from family, friends, and peers in the local community. Like traveling to the wonderful place, however, there are two paths to business ownership. One path is challenge-riddled. You will need to blaze your own trail … trudging through decision after decision associated with pricing, quality, and strategies to take on well-funded competitors … carefully traverse ordeals related to branding, marketing, and advertising … and the daily issues related to legal matters, employment concerns, and government regulation. Or on the road to business ownership, you could also choose the well-worn path: Purchasing a Franchise. On the well-worn path of franchise ownership, you will still need to take the journey. On this path, however, most of the challenges, issues, and pitfalls along the way have already been worked through. Either way, in the end, you still end up in a wonderful place. The question becomes, however, on the journey to get there how much risk do you want to take and effort do you want to expend? ******************************************************************************************* If There Is A Business That Will Give You What You Want …Is It Worth Looking For by Larry S. Powell Most people will answer "yes" to that question. So, why do so many who say they want to be self-employed and own their own business give up on achieving their dream? There are a number of reasons. One primary one...often business owner "wannabes" simply lose their focus and drift away. They may blame it on the economy, their friends, or other external reasons. Simply stated, they hit a speed bump called “uncertainty and anxiety†and then let their dream slip away. Buying a business is a serious decision. During those times when I was ready to give in to my anxiety, I would see a scripture or quote in the newspaper, magazine, or on a bill board referencing risk…opportunity…achieving your dream, etc. Don't let your nerves prevent you from achieving the lifestyle you deserve. Don't Settle. Get What You Want. If you don't pursue your dream, you will end up working for someone who did! Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? JANUARY 2016 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Would You Want To Work For...You? By Jack Welch October 26, 2015 Over the past 15 years, I’ve held Q&A sessions with over a million people at more than a thousand events around the world. In all but a handful of these events, people bring up their bosses – and vent about them. This topic comes up without fail, no matter where I am, or what industry or company I’m speaking to. The troubles range from, “My boss is too difficult and demanding†to “My boss doesn’t really care about me, it’s all about her†to “I’ve been busting my butt and my boss just doesn’t recognize my performance -- he feels that everyone is equally wonderful†to “There’s no focus on how much you do, it’s who you know.†I can’t think of a lament I haven’t heard. The basic question is the same… People want to know what they should do in these situations. “I just can’t stand it. Do I quit? Do I ask for a transfer?â€...“Do I go above the boss to his or her boss?†Or “Am I just plain stuck with this guy?†For years, I’ve tried to give advice ranging from, “Stick it out with a set of goals for a defined period of time before you jump†to “Going to the boss’s boss is almost always a fast way to lose†to “Try to open up a good, candid but non-incriminating conversation with your boss . . . Coming in from the side – not head on.†Despite having offered just about every possible answer for relief, more often than not, I haven’t satisfied the unhappy employee. Several months ago, I came up with what I think is the better answer, as far as career development is concerned. I’ve turned the question back on the questioner, by asking a new question that might prove helpful, not only in their current situation but going forward – a question, I hope, will help more people become better bosses in the process: WOULD YOU WANT TO WORK FOR . . . YOU? Yes, it takes a certain threshold of self-awareness to recognize your own flaws, but you should see the look on people’s faces when they stop to honestly think through their own leadership characteristics. The self-confident, self-aware person, upon reflection, seems to really respond to this question. The follow up reception I have received has been incredibly positive, demonstrated by the emails and letters from people in the audiences who found this exercise really useful. Many of them had taken the chance to spend some quiet time reflecting on both their strengths and their flaws -- and, from their notes, appeared open to dealing with their weaknesses in order to become stronger, more effective leaders. Leaders who people want to follow. I was hoping that maybe others would benefit from wrestling with that same introspective question. “WOULD YOU WANT TO WORK FOR . . . YOU?†************************************************************************************************************************************** Perhaps you are in an intolerable employment situation and would like to work for…YOU. Sports Marketing… This home-based franchise will provide you the opportunity to own a sports marketing business. Limited exclusive territories are now available throughout the nation. From Schools & Colleges to Little Leagues - from Park & Rec Departments to Private Organizations, here is your chance to help fund their programs and replace their outdated equipment through customized marketing programs. All of this, while building a successful business that you can be proud of. If you love sports and always wanted to own your own business, now is the perfect time to take that step. There is no better way for local, regional and national businesses to contact with their demographics than at the community level. The sponsorship world has had a "trickle down" effect from being a major part of the professional sports leagues to the college level (March Madness, The Bowl Championship Series, etc.) to the communities across the nation where they can make the most impact on everyday consumers. As a franchise owner, will capitalize on this ever-growing trend to partner those athletic programs with the businesses that can help them. From Equipment (scoreboards, score tables, wall padding, etc.) to Capital Projects - from Revenue-Generating Programs to Event Management, this franchise is able to help. As many schools and organizations across the country face massive budget cuts, one constant remains the same - athletic and grassroots programs are usually the first to get hit. Those organizations face the daily chore of doing more with less because there isn't anything left in the budget. In addition, the lack of funds forces coaches and organizers to initiate "pay-to-play" policies or drop certain programs altogether. This franchise has developed a unique program that can help organizations nationwide to obtain the equipment they so desperately need and, in the process, generate much needed revenue for them. Investment: Grand Slam Territory… Investment: $30,000. The franchisor recently announced a new Flexible, Part-time Sports Marketing Franchise Option that is now available in most states at a lower cost of entry. This new “Home Run†option is the perfect solution for anyone wanting to build a secondary income stream or for those ready for a career transition without having to leave their current employment. The investment in the lower tier franchise…Home Run Territory is only $14,000. Note: The Home Run option does not have a defined, EXCLUSIVE territory and while they can support, market, sell and aid in tournaments and events --- we don’t let Home Run franchisees HOST events because of the time commitment needed (and they’ve opted for the “part time†option). There could be an exception made for any special cases though. Both options have full use of and access to our brand, systems, software, materials, contracts, conferences, training and knowledge base. In addition, both options can seek projects anywhere they wish (within reason) EXCEPT for inside another Franchisee’s Grand Slam territory. 14. “HORN†In On Franchise / Business Ownership …a monthly post with blurbs, links, and other words-of-wisdom regarding self-employment; career transition; and franchise / business ownership; as well as information for business owners who may be interested in franchising their business. SEPTEMBER 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown- Are You Ready? I Am! Yep, I'm Ready And I Hope You Are Too. Go Horns Go. The Insecurity of J-O-B Security By Larry Carnell Over the last several decades we have looked backed to our grandparents, parents, and in many cases even our own life experiences and have been given the impression that a job means security and if we become better educated and work hard that our careers and incomes will continue to advance as we grow older. However, the facts may be quite different than our perception. For those of us who have been analyzing the facts… there seems to be definite growing signs of “ageism†and growing forms of age discrimination. Whatever our age, many are committed to believing those issues are happening to others or that occurs to people five years older from whatever age that we’re currently at! The facts strongly suggest that’s an unrealistic measurement tool. The real facts (according to at least two independent state studies) suggest that age discrimination starts at age 45! Much lower than what many are willing to admit. The consequence of not recognizing the trends can be very costly. Here are disturbing figures: People past the age of 45 looking for a new job can often take as much as twice as long (or longer) to find a job versus younger age groups. There are often three (3) people applying for every new job (often times those other candidates are younger). Length of replacement jobs are often shorter than previously held jobs (typical average is 2 ½ years for people past the age of 45). Once you lose that job… you’re now even older and competing with even younger competitors for the next job. We are seeing peak incomes declining once one passes the age of 45 (not unusual for many to see their income decrease 20-30% IF one finds a job). We are simply not seeing incomes continue to rise as experience grows. Often just the opposite is happening. One of an employer’s biggest and fastest growing expenses are healthcare related costs. Those costs and risks are obviously higher as one ages. A single major illness can significantly impact the operating costs of a small to midsize business owner. Owners are cautious about assuming that growing risk. A company’s healthcare cost is often directly related to the average age and gender of their employees. Men in particular live shorter lives – cost for insuring a male past the age of 45 can rise significantly compared with men in their 30’s. Insurance companies may even discourage business owners from hiring older employees. Employers looking to decrease cost and improve profits are recognizing this! One would think that knowledge and experience is extremely valuable and that years of experience would be worth acquiring and keeping. .. so why are the trends suggesting older and experienced employees are not as valued? The answer may be found in technology. Why is this happening? Simply stated… One is either an asset or a liability. Some assets provide a better return on investment and therefore are worth more. As that return on investment of the older asset decreases, or other newer assets can replace that more expensive asset the value of the older asset diminishes. Illustrations: The mature experienced employee is now not the only source of information. The mature experienced employee was once the ‘brains’ of the business… now much of that information can be stored and accessed in a computer for thousands versus hiring someone that may cost tens of thousands of dollars more. Rather than hiring a full time experienced and expensive employee, employers can now outsource that resource need and only pay for it when they need it. Information, seminars and answers are often available FREE via the internet. Even the federal government has agencies (SCORE, SBDC, SBA) that will provide you FREE consulting services to reduce the need and expense of keeping experienced and more costly employees on staff. How to regain control and better security. Retrain – Re-invent yourself. This may be difficult or costly. Focus on careers where there is growing demand and shrinking personnel resources Consider business/franchise ownership The argument of business or franchise ownership. Business ownership is one of the few areas where one can gain greater control of one’s own destiny and provide greater ‘long-term’ security, while not only providing an income stream but also building equity and long term income with wealth protection which is NOT provided with most J-O-Bs. Business ownership does come with risks. However, one of the most difficult things for many to understand is that it’s often virtually impossible to eliminate risk unless one also eliminates opportunity. For many approaching or passing the age of 45… the risk of business ownership may be less than the risk of job insecurity, declining lengths of employment, declining pay scales and other factors. The prevailing perception that the cost of owning a business is expensive is Not true!!! Technology and especially franchising is actually causing the cost of entry to business ownership to decrease. The risk may also be less by using other folks’ trials and errors to maximize your potential for success. Estimates are that the cost of the average franchise purchased has DECREASED almost 30% over the last 5-10 years. Many opportunities don’t require the fixed or variable costs once required. Many of the newer high demand and successful concepts enable people to operate out of their homes and even provide product and or services across the country… unheard of decades ago. Real average earnings: For someone making $75,000 per year that works 2 ½ years and then is laid off and it takes a year to find a job (not unusual – even though many do not think that it will take that long)… one’s average yearly income is really closer to $53,400. Many don’t want to accept a job unless it pays them what they have made ‘previously’. Likely there will continue to multiple (often GOOD) applicants for every job, so declining wages are probable for the foreseeable future. June 2015 ENTREPRENEURSHIP Is Living A Few Years Of Your Life Like Most People Won’t, So That You Can Spend The Rest Of Your Life Like Most People Can’t. -Unknown Business Success... A Piece Of Cake A Piece of Cake by Frank Agin, AmSpirit Business Connections Who doesn't love cake? No one, that's who. Some might like one kind more than another – white, chocolate, sponge, angel food, upside down, or whatever. Nevertheless, everyone loves cake. There are two ways of baking a cake. With the first, before you bake the batter you have to gather up all the various ingredients. You will need things like all-purpose flour, salt, milk, shortening, flavoring, and baking powder (not soda ... very important). Then you will need to correctly measure each out, being sure to keep straight cups, teaspoons, and tablespoons. Finally, you need to mix it all up in the right order. With the second way, you buy a box of cake mix, add some milk, a couple eggs and you are good to go. Either way (after 25 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees and some frosting), you have delicious cake to enjoy. Yum! Success in business is much the same. Who wouldn't want to have their own successful business? Any reasonably intelligent person, like you, would. After all, who doesn't love freedom, pride of ownership, and the ability to chart their own course? Again, there are two ways to accomplish this. With the first, you need to develop the concept, including the product or service, pricing, as well as means of distribution. Then you work up the branding, such as logos, marketing materials and advertising programs, and then diligently protect it all with copyrights, and trademarks. Then you pull this all together in a process, which might include legal agreements, training and development programs, procedures for dealing with employees and unhappy customers, as well as researching equipment, technologies and other infrastructure. Whew! With the second way, you simply buy a franchise. Either way (after infusing commitment, energy, and enthusiasm), you have your own successful business. Cool! The only question remaining is whether you want to undertake the high expense and incredibly complicated (and risky) process of building a successful business from scratch or essentially grabbing one ready-to-go off the shelf? Remember with franchising, business success is really a piece of cake. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you stand, as in what direction you are moving.†Are you allowing your professional life to wander aimlessly, or stand still? Perhaps you have always dreamed about being self-employed? So, if self-employment...business ownership is your aspiration...are you going to stand on the sideline and watch opportunity pass you by, or take positive steps towards realizing your dream…the independence, freedom, and improved work-life that is often enjoyed by business owners? Remember, a window of opportunity won't open itself.... The 10 Types of Franchises to Watch in 2015 ENTREPRENEUR Every year we gaze into the future and try to pick 10 franchise categories that will make the biggest splash in the coming 12 months. For 2015, we’ve chosen a mix of established categories that are being invigorated by new ideas, sophomore industries that are just starting to show their strength and promising but unproven concepts. No matter what type of franchise you’re interested in pursuing, always do your research before investing. ü Children’s Enrichment - Children's sports, fitness, art and music programs continue to perform well, but STEM is the big word in the enrichment world. In the past few years, several fast-growing franchises have focused on making science, technology, engineering and math fun for kids. ü E-Cigarettes - With close to 6 million adults now using e-cigarettes, it's no surprise that stores have started to franchise. But legislators scrambling to catch up with the trend by imposing new regulations could challenge the fledgling industry's growth. ü Fitness - You may hate going to the gym, but in the franchise world, there's nothing but love for the fitness category. Large gym franchises are still going strong, while smaller concepts are gaining muscle by offering niche options, like kickboxing, Pilates, dance and in-home training. ü Paint-and-Sip Studios - First added to our trends list last year, this entertainment concept is still relatively new but already proving itself, with more competitors making an appearance and existing companies experiencing impressive growth ü Pizza - Traditional delivery-focused pizza franchises abound, but it's fast-casual, build-your-own joints using an assembly-line format that are bringing renewed popularity to the sector. ü Potatoes - Is the humble spud ready to go from side dish to starring role? A handful of new franchises are betting on it by offering menus featuring baked potatoes, fries, tater tots, chips and nothing else. ü Property Management - In the wake of the housing market crash of 2008, the number of rental properties rose--and so did the need for people to manage those properties. The success of the franchises that stepped up to fill that need has attracted a healthy group of new competitors. ü Senior Care - Senior home care has become one of the mainstays of franchising, but the field continues to evolve. New companies are competing with their more established counterparts by introducing additional services like patient advocacy and assisted-living placement. ü Spa Services - In just over a decade, the massage business has become one of franchising's most competitive areas. Other spa and beauty services, like waxing, threading and spray tanning, are following its lead to reach more customers through franchising. ü Vending - Vending has long been a popular avenue for those looking to start their own business, yet it has rarely been franchised--until recently. The success of these new ventures is likely to attract even more vending companies to the franchise model in the future. **************************************************************************************************************************************************** Every year, thousands of people dream of owning a business and are drawn to the independence, flexibility and freedom of being self-employed.
