Moody High School (Corpus Christi, TX) catcher Michael Cantu has decided to forego playing professional baseball and will instead maintain his commitment to play at The University of Texas, as confirmed by Horn Sports' Kylie Hopkins on Tuesday. The 6-5, 220lb. catcher was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Cantu swings a big bat and will add instant offense to the Texas offense next season.
While it is unclear what position Cantu will ultimately play at Texas (incumbent catcher Tres Barrera will only be a sophmore in 2015), it is evident that with Cantu's talent he will have a starting role in some capacity with the Longhorn baseball team. The Longhorns have also added another high school catcher to the 2014 class in Cedar Ridge High School's (Round Rock, TX) Michael McCann.
Cantu was named to Perfect Game's 2014 3rd Team of All Americans and the Texas All Region 1st Team.
